Can Giants' Webb bounce back against the Dodgers?
San Francisco (76-76 SU, 70-82 RL, and 72-74-6 O/U) lost two of three games to Arizona in its previous series. The Giants are 4-6 in their last ten games (the over/under was split 5-5).
SF will turn to right-hander Logan Webb on Thursday against Los Angeles. In his last outing (4.0 IP loss to the Dodgers), the 28-year-old surrendered six runs on ten hits and two walks. He is 14-10 with a 3.34 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 31 appearances (188.2 IP) this season, including 7-6 with a 3.54 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 14 road starts (84.0 IP).
The Giants don't have the notoriety of their National League West division rivals, but they have been competitive in the NL West this season, especially recently, winning five of their last eight series. San Francisco is still nine games back of LA in the division, but is only three games out of the NL Wild Card race. Can they finish strong to make the playoffs?
San Francisco Giants Injury Report: No injuries for tomorrow's game against the Dodgers.
Los Angeles' Yamamoto has allowed just two runs this month
Los Angeles (84-67 SU, 65-86 RL, and 71-73-7 O/U) wrapped up a series with Philadelphia on Wednesday after dropping the first two games. The Dodgers were 6-4 in their previous ten games (the over was 5-4-1).
LA will turn to righty Yoshinobu Yamamoto tomorrow against San Francisco. In his last start, the 27-year-old held the Giants to one run on one hit and one walk, fanning ten batters in seven innings. He is 11-8 with a 2.66 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in 28 starts (162.1 IP) this season, including 3-4 with a 3.30 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 11 home starts (62.2 IP).
The Dodgers are fresh off a World Series title with the biggest payroll in baseball, but with a 26-28 record in the second half, they are in a tight race to win the NL West. Los Angeles has all the talent in the world, but making it back to the top of the mountain will still be a challenge. Can they hold off San Diego in the division title race?
Los Angeles Dodgers Baseball Injury Report: No new injuries for Thursday's game versus the Giants.
Giants vs. Dodgers Pick
Run Line Pick for Giants vs. Dodgers
- LA Covers Run Line -1.5 (5 Units)
Webb has struggled in consecutive starts against Los Angeles, surrendering 12 runs on 16 hits, including three homers. He is also 6-7 with a 4.69 ERA in 19 career appearances against the Dodgers. Current LA hitters boast a .336 BA/.537 SLG/.402 wOBA in 255 combined plate appearances against San Francisco's starter. Yamamoto has been much more successful against the visitors, holding the Giants to .152 BA/.273 SLG/.229 wOBA in 73 plate appearances. LA's starter has momentum, too, as he has allowed just two runs on two hits with 20 Ks in his last two outings (15.2 innings).
The Giants are just 32-43 against the run line after a win this season. I'm betting the Dodgers' starting pitching edge will give them enough cushion to cover the run line on Thursday night in LA.
Over/Under Pick for Giants vs. Dodgers
- Over 8 (4 Units)
Los Angeles scores 5.6 runs per game at Dodger Stadium (leads MLB in wRC+ at home) and has been successful against Webb recently. LA is also third in wRC+ against right-handed pitchers this year and third in overall wRC+ in the last week. The Giants' starter is in for a challenge, to say the least. Yamamoto will fare well against San Francisco, but the Dodgers' bullpen is inconsistent (bottom ten in ERA). With the Giants fighting to make the playoffs, they'll put up enough of a fight to push the total over eight runs.
