San Francisco is heating up

San Francisco (71-69 SU, 63-77 RL, and 66-68-6 O/U) swept Colorado in its previous series. The Giants are 9-1 in their last ten games (the over was 6-4).

SF will start right-hander Carson Seymour tomorrow against the Cardinals. The 26-year-old has made 11 MLB appearances this season, with one start under his belt. He pitched three innings in that outing (August 30 vs. Baltimore), allowing four runs on five hits, including two homers. Seymour is 0-2 with a 4.74 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 24.2 innings, including a 4.09 ERA and 1.36 WHIP on the road (11.0 innings).

The Giants don't have the notoriety of their National League West division rivals, but they have been competitive in the NL West this season. The team is just 19-24 since the All-Star break, but has recently turned it on, winning nine of ten. San Francisco is only four games out of the NL Wild Card race, and if its bats stay hot, it could be a serious contender down the stretch.

San Francisco Giants Baseball Injury Report: No new injuries for Friday's game against St. Louis.

Cardinals win their previous two series

St. Louis (70-71 SU, 69-72 RL, and 71-62-8 O/U) won two of three games against the Athletics in its previous series. The Cardinals are 6-4 in their last ten games (the over/under was split 5-5).

St. Louis will turn to righty Michael McGreevy on Friday against San Francisco. In his last start, the 25-year-old surrendered one run on five hits in a six-frame win against Cincinnati. He is 6-2 with a 4.17 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 12 appearances (69.0 IP) this season, including 2-2 with a 5.31 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in seven home outings (39.0 IP).

The Cards are hovering right around .500, but they are 16.5 games out of the NL Central division race and 5.5 games out of the Wild Card chase. Like the Giants, they have struggled since the All-Star break, compiling a 19-25 record. Can they at least finish the season with a winning record?

St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Injury Report: No new injuries for tomorrow's game against the Giants.

Spread Pick for Giants vs. Cardinals

  • Giants ML -105 (4 Units)

The Giants have been on a tear offensively, scoring 79 runs in their previous ten games. They also rank 2nd in MLB in wRC+ and wOBA over the last week. That has fueled their 9-1 hot streak, giving fans a glimpse of hope that they can make the postseason. I expect them to continue to rake tomorrow against McGreevy, who has struggled at home. The Redbirds' starter also ranks in the bottom ten percent of MLB pitchers in xBA, K%, and Whiff%.

San Francisco should also limit St. Louis' offense, with Seymour opening in a bullpen game. The Giants' pen ranks 2nd in ERA and has allowed the second-fewest long balls in MLB. The Cardinals have been competitive recently, but their lineup ranks 22nd in wRC+ and 24th in wOBA over the last seven days.

OverUnder Pick for Giants vs. Cardinals

  • Under 8.5 (4 Units)

As long as McGreevy can keep the Giants from scoring too many early runs, the under should be in play. I expect the Redbirds' starter to compete, as he was impressive in August, going 4-0 with a 3.50 ERA. He's also coming off a quality start in his last outing. After a day off, both teams' bullpens should be rested, too. That's especially important for San Francisco, as it's planning a bullpen game. Given that these are top-five relief units in terms of ERA, the value is on the under in Friday night's game.
