Mariners Battling to Remain in Playoff Position
Seattle dropped their fourth straight and sixth in the last seven games as they were downed in the opening game of the series Friday night. The Mariners entered Saturday 73-68 and stood second in the AL West, 3.5 games behind the Astros for the top spot. They held the final wild card spot in the American League playoff picture, half a game ahead of Texas to remain in the playoff field. On Friday night, Seattle finished with six hits as Leo Rivas (RBI) and Jorge Polanco (run) each had two. Logan Gilbert threw six innings, allowing one run on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts, but didn’t factor in the decision. Gabe Speier (2-3) took the loss in relief as he allowed three runs on four hits with no walks or strikeouts without retiring a hitter.
Luis Castillo gets the call for the Mariners on getaway day as he logs his 29th start of the season in this one. He is 8-8 with a 3.94 ERA, a 1.294 WHIP, 44 walks and 138 strikeouts over 155.1 innings of work this year. Castillo took the loss in his last start, which came against the Rays on the road Monday. He threw four innings, allowing five runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts in a game the Mariners dropped 10-2. In his last three starts, Castillo is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA, a 2.08 WHIP, six walks and 13 strikeouts over 13 innings of work. Castillo makes his seventh career start against the Braves in this contest. He is 3-1 with a 1.80 ERA, a 1.143 WHIP, seven walks and 33 strikeouts over 35 innings of work against them. Castillo is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA, a 1.625 WHIP, three walks and 12 strikeouts over eight innings of work in two career starts at Truist Park.
Atlanta Looking to Secure Series Win
Atlanta won their second straight as they prevailed in the opening game of this set Friday night at home. The Braves entered Saturday night 64-77 and stood fourth in the NL East, 18 games behind the Phillies for the top spot. They were 12 games behind the Mets for the final wild card spot in the National League playoff picture. Against Seattle Friday, Atlanta finished with 10 hits as Ozzie Albies (run, RBI) had three while Jurickson Profar (two runs) and Nacho Alvarez Jr. each had two. Chris Sale threw 6.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits with no walks and nine strikeouts, but didn’t factor in the decision. Tyler Kinley (5-3) earned the win with a 1-2-3 eighth inning while Raisel Iglesias tossed a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out one, for his 24th save.
Spencer Strider is on the mound for the Braves as he makes his 20th start of the season in this contest. He is 5-12 with a 4.97 ERA, a 1.391 WHIP, 41 walks and 106 strikeouts over 101.1 innings of work on the year. Strider didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came Monday on the road against the Cubs. He threw five innings, allowing three runs on five hits with three walks and one strikeout in a 7-6, 10-inning, Braves loss. In his last three starts, Strider is 0-2 with a 6.60 ERA, a 1.60 WHIP, six walks and six strikeouts over 15 innings of work. Strider, in his 87th career major league appearance and 74th start, pitches against the Mariners for the first time here. He makes his 45th career appearance, 37th start, at Truist Park. Strider is 18-10 with a 3.87 ERA, a 1.125 WHIP, 65 walks and 329 strikeouts over 218.2 innings of work in those outings.
Mariners vs. Braves Pick
Moneyline Pick for Mariners vs. Braves
- Mariners (4 units)
While Atlanta took the opening game of the set Friday night and the Mariners are reeling, it’s tough to see the Braves maintaining that momentum. Strider has sputtered all season long and is 0-4 with a 9.13 ERA while allowing eight homers over 23.2 innings of work in that span. Seattle has struggled, but they are trying to fight to maintain a wild-card spot with their lead down to a tenuous half-game. Castillo has struggled in his last few turns and we’ve discussed the road splits of Seattle’s staff this season. However, with no room for error and the struggles Strider has had this season, gives the Mariners the edge.
Over/Under Pick for Mariners vs. Braves
- Over (4 units)
Seattle has seen the over go 76-59-6 in their first 141 games of the year entering Saturday night. The Mariners are 13th in the majors with 4.53 runs per game, a number that climbs to 4.79 runs per game on the road. They have an average total of 9.01 runs per game and that number rockets to 9.80 runs per game as the visiting team. Atlanta entered Saturday night having gone under the total in 68 of their 141 games, with 10 pushes, on the season. The Braves are 15th in the majors with 4.41 runs per game, a number that slides to 4.36 runs per game at home. Atlanta has an average total of 8.91 runs per game and that number drops slightly to 8.84 runs per game at home this season. With both pitchers sputtering at the moment, take the over in this contest.
