Seattle Trying to Secure First World Series Berth in Franchise History
Seattle dropped Games 3 and 4 at home before rallying late to win Game 5 and take a 3-2 series advantage heading back east. The Mariners need to win just one of two games in a venue where they prevailed twice already in this series to earn their first appearance in the World Series in franchise history. Against Toronto at home in Game 5 Friday night, Seattle finished with five hits as Cal Raleigh (run, RBI) and Eugenio Suarez (two runs, five RBI) each had a pair in the contest. Suarez (his second and third) homered twice, including a tie-breaking grand slam in the eighth inning, while Raleigh (his fourth) also went deep in the win. Bryce Miller threw four innings, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts, but didn’t factor in the decision. Gabe Speier (1-1) earned the win as he threw a 1-2-3 eighth inning.
Logan Gilbert gets the ball for Seattle as he makes his fourth appearance, third start, of the playoffs after going 6-6 with a 3.44 ERA, a 1.031 WHIP, 31 walks and 173 strikeouts over 131 innings of work in 25 starts during the regular season. He is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, one walk and 11 strikeouts over 11 innings of work in the playoffs. Gilbert didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came on the road in Game 2 of this series against the Blue Jays Monday night. He threw three innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts in a game the Mariners went on to win 13-4. In his last three appearances, two starts, Gilbert is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, one walk and 11 strikeouts over 11 innings of work. Gilbert makes his eighth career start against the Blue Jays in this contest. He is 0-2 with a 5.30 ERA, a 1.473 WHIP, seven walks and 43 strikeouts over 37.1 innings of work against them. Gilbert is 0-1 with a 3.22 ERA, a 1.299 WHIP, six walks and 28 strikeouts over 22.1 innings of work in four career starts at T-Mobile Park.
Blue Jays Looking to Force Game 7
Toronto had momentum after taking Games 3 and 4 while holding a one-run lead after seven innings in Game 5 before unraveling in the eighth inning to wind up with the loss. The Blue Jays now seek to pick up a win to force a Game 7 situation. In Game 5 Friday night, Toronto finished with seven hits with no player having more than one. The Blue Jays went just two of 11 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners on base in the game. Kevin Gausman threw 5.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts, but didn’t factor in the decision. Brendon Little (0-1) took the loss in relief as he allowed three runs on one hit with two walks and no strikeouts without retiring a hitter.
The Blue Jays are expected to hand the ball to rookie Trey Yesavage, who made only three regular-season major league starts, for his third postseason outing in this contest. He was 1-0 with a 3.21 ERA, a 1.429 WHIP, seven walks and 16 strikeouts over 14 innings of work in the regular season. In the postseason, he is 1-1 with a 4.82 ERA, a 0.857 WHIP, four walks and 15 strikeouts over 9.1 innings of work. Yesavage took the loss in his last start, which came in Game 2 of the AL Championship Series at home against the Mariners. He threw four innings, allowing five runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in a 13-4 Blue Jays loss. Over his last three starts, Yesavage is 2-1 with a 3.14 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, five walks and 20 strikeouts over 14.1 innings of work. Yesavage took the loss in his lone career start against the Mariners, which came in Game 2 of this series Monday night. He threw four innings, allowing five runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in a 13-4 Blue Jays loss. This marks his fourth career start at Rogers Centre with three of them coming in the postseason. Yesavage is 2-1 with a 3.14 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, five walks and 20 strikeouts over 14.1 innings of work. In the minors this season, Yesavage was 5-1 with a 3.12 ERA, a 0.969 WHIP, 41 walks and 160 strikeouts over 98 innings in 25 appearances, 22 starts, split between Single-A Dunedin of the Florida State League, Vancouver of the A+ Northwest League, Double-A New Hampshire of the Eastern League and Triple-A Buffalo of the International League.
Mariners vs. Blue Jays Pick
Moneyline Pick for Mariners vs. Blue Jays
- Blue Jays (4 units)
The road team has won four of the five games in this series, with Seattle’s Game 5 triumph the lone time the host team has prevailed in the series. Seattle’s bullpen should be at full strength after having the off day Saturday, which works in their favor. Yesavage was stellar against the Yankees in his first postseason star,t but came back to earth in his outing against the Mariners in Game 2 of the set. It’s a tough spot for a rookie to be thrust into and while Yesavage has been decent at the big league level, it’s tough to have faith in him or the Toronto bullpen based on what we saw Friday. Take the Mariners to reach the Fall Classic for the first time.
Over/Under Pick for Mariners vs. Blue Jays
- Over (4 units)
Seattle has seen the over go 95-71-6 in their first 172 games of the year entering Sunday night. The Mariners are 10th in the majors with 4.71 runs per game, a number that climbs to 5.15 runs per game on the road. They have an average total of 9.02 runs per game and that number rockets to 9.93 runs per game as the visiting team. Toronto has seen the over post a 93-73-5 mark on the year entering Sunday night. The Blue Jays are 3rd in the majors with 5.02 runs per game and that number edges up to 5.39 runs per game at Rogers Centre. Toronto has an average total of 9.50 runs per game but that number climbs to 9.60 runs per game at home. Eight of the 10 meetings between the teams this season, including the postseason, have gone over the number. Look for this game to wind up over the mark as well.
