St. Louis Cardinals vs Los Angeles Dodgers Preview

St. Louis and Los Angeles finish their series Thursday after the Cardinals rallied for an 8-6 win in 10 innings Wednesday. Thomas Saggese delivered the go-ahead infield single, Joshua Baez added a two-run double, and rookie Leo Bernal hit his first major-league home run. The Dodgers have now lost six of their last eight, creating an unusual matchup in which Los Angeles owns a massive starting-pitcher edge but has not been playing like a dominant favorite.

Recent Form

The Cardinals reached 70-70 with Wednesday's win and have now taken advantage of Los Angeles' late-game problems twice in this series. The Dodgers got home runs from Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto carried a no-hitter into the sixth, yet they still could not close the game. That matters because Thursday's run-line wager is built around St. Louis staying competitive even if the Cardinals never fully solve the Dodgers' starter.

Starting Pitchers

The starting matchup strongly favors Los Angeles. Skubal enters with a 2.84 ERA and gives the Dodgers one of the best left-handed starters in baseball, while Mathews carries a 5.03 ERA. St. Louis cannot expect to win the first five on pure pitching quality. The Cardinals need Mathews to avoid a large early inning and force the Dodgers to strand runners. If he can keep Los Angeles to two or three runs through five, the St. Louis bullpen and late-game offense can make the +1.5 valuable.

Bullpen and Late-Inning Outlook

St. Louis used eight pitchers Wednesday, so the Cardinals cannot assume the same late-game formula will be available again. That is the biggest concern with taking +1.5 rather than simply fading Los Angeles on the moneyline. The Dodgers have their own late-game issues, however, and those problems have contributed directly to six losses in eight games. If Mathews can provide five reasonable innings, St. Louis still has enough relief options to piece together the rest without asking one tired arm to cover multiple high-leverage frames.

The historical run-line split is the reason to consider St. Louis despite the pitching mismatch. The Cardinals are at +6.41% ROI on the road run line, while Los Angeles has been an extraordinary -33.56% at home. St. Louis' road first-five spread history is also strong, but Skubal makes the early version much riskier. The full-game +1.5 lets the Cardinals use the bullpen and late offense that have already hurt the Dodgers in this series. More historical angles for Thursday are available in our MLB betting trends.

Odds and Line Movement

Los Angeles was around -295 on the morning moneyline, and later markets pushed the Dodgers closer to -300 or even -310. St. Louis has remained in the +240 to +250 range. The run line has stayed near Cardinals +1.5 at plus money, while the total sits around 7.5. The move toward Los Angeles reflects the huge Skubal advantage, but it also leaves St. Louis getting a run and a half at an unusually attractive price.

What Will Decide the Game

Mathews' first three innings will determine whether the Cardinals can stay inside the number. He cannot allow Freeman, Betts and the middle of the Dodgers order to hit with multiple runners aboard. St. Louis also needs to make Skubal work enough that Los Angeles cannot simply hand the game from its ace to the preferred late relievers. The Dodgers have shown repeatedly this week that a one- or two-run lead is not safe if the bullpen has to protect it.

Best Bet - St. Louis Cardinals +1.5 (+115)

St. Louis +1.5 at +115 is the Best Bet. Skubal is clearly the better starter, so this is not a claim that the Cardinals should be favored. It is a bet on St. Louis staying within one run against a Dodgers team that has lost six of eight and has been terrible on the home run line. The plus-money price provides enough reward to accept the pitching disadvantage, and a 4-3 Dodgers win still cashes the ticket.

Prediction: Los Angeles Dodgers 4, St. Louis Cardinals 3
