Wait til next year for St. Louis

The St. Louis Cardinals will try to regroup in the offseason as the proud franchise attempts to get back into the playoffs in 2026. They have parted ways with some veterans this year at the trade deadline, with more to come this offseason. The Cards have dropped three straight games entering Friday night’s series opener in Milwaukee. That includes a 4-2 loss to the Mariners in 13 innings on Wednesday night.  The game was tied at one through nine innings and, after both teams scored a single run in the 11th, the Mariners were able to walk it off on a two-run home run off of reliever Ryan Fernandez in the bottom of the 13th.

The Cardinals are now three games under .500 heading into this weekend. They will try to inch closer to .500 with a win on Saturday with right-hander Sonny Gray on the mound. Gray is 13-8 on the season in 29 starts, including 12 quality starts. He has allowed 165 hits in 163.2 innings of work and given up 23 home runs. Gray has an ERA of 4.45 and a WHIP of 1.22. He’s struck out 179 while walking just 35. The Cardinals have lost three of Gray’s last five starts. He is 4-3 on the road with an ERA of 5.24 in 10 games.

Brewers fighting for #1 seed in NL

The Milwaukee Brewers enter this weekend’s series with a five-game lead over the Cubs in the NL Central Division and a two-game lead over the Phillies for the best record in the National League. They are coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of the Rangers in Texas this week, including a 6-3 loss on Wednesday. Ace Freddy Peralta allowed six hits and five runs to take the loss. He falls to 16-6 on the season.

The Brewers, despite the three-game losing streak, still have the best record in MLB. They’ll try to push one step closer to clinching their division on Saturday night against the Cardinals. The BrewCrew will go with veteran righty Branden Woodruff on the mound. Woodruff has made 11 starts since coming off the IL and is 6-2 with six quality starts. He has allowed just 43 hits in 59.2 innings of work and has an ERA of 3.32 and a WHIP of just 0.96. Woodruff has walked 14 and struck out 74 batters. The Brewers have won three of Woodruff’s last five starts. He is 2-0 at home in five starts with an ERA of 3.67.

Key Injuries: SP Logan Henderson, RP Trevor Megill, RP Nick Mears, and RP DL Hall are out.

Cardinals at Brewers Pick

Money line Pick for Cardinals vs. Brewers

  • Brewers ML (4 units)

The Brewers still have plenty to play for with the season winding down. Clinching the division is their first order of business, and clinching the best record overall is not far behind. They'll send Woodruff to the hill on Saturday, and the veteran righty is 2-0 at home this season, and the team has won three of his last five starts. The Cardinals have lost three of Gray’s last five starts, and Gray sports an ERA over 5.00 on the road this season. The Cardinals are wrapping up a disappointing season and will not fight to stay with the Brewers on Saturday night.

Take the Brewers with the money line.

Over/Under Pick for Cardinals vs. Brewers

  • Over (paragraph, bold)

The Brewers have gone over the total in three of their last five games entering play on Friday night. They have also gone over the number in three of the last five games that Woodruff has started. The Brewers are also hitting over .270 as a team in their last ten games. They’ll take advantage of the fading Gray and help push this game over the number.

Take the over.
