Tampa Bay Seeing Playoff Hopes Fading
Tampa Bay dropped their third straight game as they were beaten at home by Cleveland on Sunday afternoon. The Rays entered Tuesday 71-72 and stood fourth in the AL East, 11 games behind the Blue Jays for the top spot. They were 4.5 games behind Seattle for the final wild-card spot in the American League playoff picture. On Sunday against Cleveland, Tampa Bay recorded nine hits, though Brandon Lowe was the lone player with two. Carson Williams (his second) went deep to account for Tampa Bay’s lone run as the team was zero for six with runners in scoring position in the contest. Drew Rasmussen threw five scoreless innings, allowing three hits with three walks and two strikeouts, but didn’t factor in the decision. Garrett Cleavinger (1-5) took the loss in relief as he threw two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Ryan Pepiot gets the call for the Rays in this contest as he makes his 30th start of the season in the opener. He is 11-10 with a 3.59 ERA, a 1.129 WHIP, 57 walks and 161 strikeouts over 163 innings of work on the year. Pepiot earned the win in his last start, which came against the Guardians at home Thursday night. He threw five innings, allowing no runs on no hits with two walks and six strikeouts in an eventual 4-2 Rays victory. In his last three starts, Pepiot is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA, a 0.533 WHIP, six walks and 15 strikeouts over 15 innings of work. Pepiot, in his 73rd career major league appearance, 66th start, pitches against the White Sox for the first time here. As a result, this marks his first career start at Rate Field as well.
White Sox Trying to Maintain Recent Surge
Chicago downed the Tigers in the rubber game of a three-game set in the Motor City for their seventh win in eight games Sunday afternoon. The White Sox entered Tuesday 55-89 on the year and stood in the basement of the AL Central, 27 games behind the Tigers for the top spot. They have been eliminated from playoff contention. Against Detroit Sunday, Chicago banged out 11 hits as Chase Meidroth (run), Andrew Benintendi (two RBI), Mike Tauchman (run) and Lenyn Sosa (two runs, three RBI) each had two. Sosa (his 20th) went deep for the White Sox in the victory. Davis Martin threw 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts, but didn’t factor in the decision. Grant Taylor (2-4) earned the win as he fanned both hitters he faced to end the seventh. Mike Vasil worked a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out one, for his fourth save.
The White Sox have not officially named a starter for this contest, but the expectation is that Sean Burke will make his 25th appearance, 21st start, of the season here. He is 4-10 with a 4.28 ERA, a 1.445 WHIP, 54 walks and 110 strikeouts over 117.2 innings of work on the year. Burke took the loss in his last start, which came August 16 on the road against the Royals. He threw 3.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, one walk and three strikeouts in a 6-2 Chicago loss. In his last three starts, Burke is 0-2 with a 5.25 ERA, a 1.75 WHIP, six walks and 17 strikeouts over 12 innings of work. Burke didn’t factor in the decision in his lone career start against the Rays, which came on the road July 21. He threw four innings, allowing two runs (none earned) on three hits with four walks and five strikeouts in an 8-3 White Sox win. Burke is 5-4 with a 3.70 ERA, a 1.342 WHIP, 30 walks and 68 strikeouts over 73 innings of work in 15 career appearances, 13 starts, at Rate Field.
Rays vs. White Sox Pick
Moneyline Pick for Rays vs. White Sox
- Rays (4 units)
Chicago has played good ball over the last week-plus, though it won’t matter in the grand scheme of things as they are eliminated from playoff contention. The White Sox are reduced to playing spoiler but their pitching is in a bit of disarray at this stage of the season. Tampa Bay is running out of time to make a playoff push and they need to take advantage of teams they are better than at this point of the season. Pepiot has been nearly unhittable in his last three starts and the Rays have something to play for at this point. Give Tampa Bay the advantage here as they pick up the win here.
Over/Under Pick for Rays vs. White Sox
- Under (4 units)
Tampa Bay has seen the under post a 73-61-9 mark on the season entering Tuesday night. The Rays are 14th with 4.50 runs per game, a number that slips to 4.36 runs per game on the road. Tampa Bay allows 4.12 runs per game, giving them an average total of 8.62 runs per game. That number falls to 8.42 runs per game away from home on the year. Chicago went into Tuesday having seen the under post a 68-68-8 mark in their first 144 games of the season. The White Sox are 26th in the majors in runs per game as they average 4.04 runs per contest. They have an average total of 8.64 runs per game on the season. At home this season, Chicago is 24th in the big leagues with 4.03 runs per contest and an average total of 8.56 runs per contest. Look for Pepiot to do a solid job on the mound, keeping this game under the total.
