Tampa Bay Rays vs Milwaukee Brewers MLB World Series Game 1 Picks, Prediction, Odds, and Line Movement for Friday October 23 2026

By: Alex MacMillan Published 10/21/2026, 05:57 PM ET

Tampa Bay and Milwaukee open the World Series on Friday night in a matchup between the best regular-season team in each league. Neither franchise has ever won the World Series, and both arrive after impressive postseason runs built around pitching depth, defense and an ability to win without relying entirely on home runs.

Milwaukee owns home-field advantage after finishing 103-59 during the regular season, while Tampa Bay went 98-64. The Brewers are favored around -158 for Game 1, with the Rays near +138 and the total sitting at only 6. That number reflects an expected matchup between Jacob Misiorowski and Drew Rasmussen, two starters capable of making offense difficult from the first inning.

Tampa Bay Rays vs Milwaukee Brewers World Series Game 1 Preview

These teams reached the World Series in different ways, but they share many of the same strengths. Tampa Bay eliminated Cleveland in six games after sweeping New York in the Division Series, while Milwaukee swept the Dodgers in the NLCS after getting past San Diego. The Rays enter the Fall Classic 7-2 this postseason, while the Brewers are 7-1.

Milwaukee has had the longer break after finishing the Dodgers in four games, which allows Pat Murphy to line up his rotation exactly as he wants. Tampa Bay did not clinch until Monday, but the Rays still have enough recovery time to send Rasmussen out on regular rest Friday.

The regular-season records also show how little separates these clubs. Tampa Bay is now 105-66 across all completed 2026 games, while Milwaukee is 110-60. The biggest split comes at American Family Field: the Brewers are 59-26 at home, while Tampa Bay enters 46-39 on the road.

Those numbers make Milwaukee a deserving favorite. The question is whether the difference between the teams is large enough to justify laying close to -160 in the opening game.

Drew Rasmussen vs Jacob Misiorowski

Rasmussen is expected to get Game 1 after functioning as Tampa Bay's ace throughout the second half. He went 11-0 with a 1.73 ERA in 15 starts after the All-Star break, and the Rays have won 14 of his last 15 starts. He also enters with the advantage of familiarity with Milwaukee after beginning his career in the Brewers organization.

His biggest challenge will be a lineup that rarely gives pitchers an easy inning. Jackson Chourio can change the game immediately at the top, Brice Turang creates pressure with contact and speed, William Contreras has been one of the best hitters of the postseason and NLCS MVP Jake Bauers repeatedly delivered in long, difficult at-bats against Los Angeles.

Milwaukee counters with Misiorowski, who led the majors during the regular season with a 1.80 ERA and 252 strikeouts. His velocity creates an obvious problem for Tampa Bay, but the postseason has also shown a possible path against him. Both San Diego and Los Angeles extended plate appearances with foul balls and forced Misiorowski into elevated pitch counts before he could work deep into the game.

That may fit Tampa Bay particularly well. The Rays struck out less frequently than any other MLB team this season and have consistently built offense around contact, speed and forcing defenders to make plays. Yandy Diaz and Jonathan Aranda can extend innings ahead of Junior Caminero, while Richie Palacios and Chandler Simpson provide additional ways to create pressure without a home run.

Milwaukee's Bullpen Is a Major Game 1 Weapon

The Brewers' relief corps may be the strongest part of this matchup. Milwaukee relievers are 7-1 with a 1.33 ERA this postseason, and Trevor Megill, Aaron Ashby and DL Hall have combined for more than 23 scoreless innings.

That matters because Misiorowski has not worked beyond the fifth inning this postseason. If Tampa Bay again forces him into a high pitch count, Milwaukee is comfortable asking its bullpen to cover four or five innings.

The Rays have plenty of late-game quality of their own. Bryan Baker has finished each of Tampa Bay's seven postseason victories without allowing a run, with Cam Booser, Kevin Kelly and Tyler Wells supplying matchup options in front of him.

The bullpen comparison makes the opening five innings particularly important. Tampa Bay does not want to spend the night chasing Milwaukee once Megill and Ashby become available, while the Brewers would prefer to prevent Caminero from seeing Baker with the tying run already on base.

The venue numbers favor Milwaukee, but Tampa Bay's betting records make the underdog difficult to dismiss. The Rays are 46-39 on the road across all 2026 games, while Milwaukee is an imposing 59-26 at home.

Both clubs have also performed well against the run line in those situations. Tampa Bay is 47-35 on the road for +8.40 units, while Milwaukee is 47-38 at home for +18.55 units. The first-five results are similarly strong: Tampa Bay's road F5 run-line record is 50-35 for +9.05 units, and Milwaukee is 49-36 at home for +9.75 units.

The total trends lean lower without producing an automatic Under play. Tampa Bay road games are 40-43-2 Over/Under/Push, while Milwaukee home games are 36-45-4. At the same time, Milwaukee's home first-five totals have gone 52-30-3 to the Over, which is a good reminder that the full-game and early-game profiles do not tell exactly the same story.

Best Bet - Tampa Bay Rays ML (+138)

Milwaukee has the stronger home record, the more intimidating Game 1 starter and arguably the better bullpen. There is a legitimate case for the favorite.

The price is what pushes the wager toward Tampa Bay.

The Rays are 105-66 overall, 46-39 on the road and 7-2 in the postseason. They also bring a starter who has been nearly unbeatable for months and a contact-oriented lineup that is unusually well suited to making Misiorowski work for every out.

Tampa Bay does not need to overpower Milwaukee. The Rays need to extend Misiorowski's early innings, keep the game close enough to reach the middle relief phase and give Caminero and Diaz opportunities with runners aboard.

Milwaukee is the more likely winner, but the gap between these teams looks smaller than the current moneyline suggests. With Tampa Bay available around +138, the underdog offers the better risk-reward position in Game 1.

Game Thesis: Milwaukee owns the clearer home-field and bullpen advantages, but Tampa Bay has an elite starter of its own, a lineup built to extend Misiorowski's pitch count and a profitable road profile. At a substantial plus-money price, the Rays are worth backing in a matchup between two closely matched teams.

Final Prediction

Prediction: Tampa Bay Rays 3, Milwaukee Brewers 2
