Tampa Bay Falls out of Contention
The Tampa Bay Rays put in plenty of hard work this season, with a mix of veteran players and rising stars, but it was not enough to reach the postseason. Tampa Bay is eliminated from postseason contention, and will likely finish fourth in the AL East, though there is a chance they fall to fifth as they are only two games ahead of the Orioles. The Rays just played in Baltimore, and lost two of three games on the road. In their last game of that series, Christopher Morel had two losses in the 6-5 loss.
Morel batted fourth as their 26-year old left fielder. He is in his finishing his first full season with the Rays, after coming over in a midseason trade last year from the Cubs. This season he has 11 home runs and 33 RBIs, while batting .223 at the plate. Junior Caminero had two hits in their last game against Baltimore. The 22-year-old third baseman is their top building block for the future as he is 6th in the MLB in home runs with 44 and has added another 109 RBIs.
Adrian Houser will make his 10th start of the season for the Rays after coming over in a midseason trade from the White Sox. He has an 8-4 record to go with his 3.18 ERA on the season. His strikeout to walk ratio is 87 to 36. In his last start, Houser gave up three runs in six innings in a loss to the Red Sox.

Meaningful Last Three for the Blue Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays have held first place in the AL East for the majority of the second half of the season, as the New York Yankees were on top for the first portion of the year. The two teams are now tied at the top of the division standings, and Toronto will not want to relinquish their crown to their big brother in the division down the stretch. The Blue Jays and Yankees will both be playing in the postseason regardless of their finish, but both still want the division championship.
Toronto is finishing up a series with the Red Sox, as they lost their first two games at home against Boston. The Blue Jays' top power hitter is George Springer, as the left fielder is leading the team with 30 home runs on the season. Springer has been their leadoff hitter as of late, and has also added 80 RBIs and a strong .304 batting average that is tied for fifth best in the MLB. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had 48 home runs in 2021, he was not able to come near that number this year, but is still putting up solid numbers with 23 home runs and 83 RBIs. Guerrero is batting .295 at the plate, and typically bats third in the lineup as their first baseman.
Shane Bieber will make his 7th start of the season as a 30-year-old right-hander. He has a 3-2 record, with the team winning in three of his last four starts. His ERA is 3.57 to go with 34 strikeouts against just five walks on the year. In his last start, Bieber gave up two runs in 6.1 innings in a loss to the Royals.
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Toronto Blue Jays picks
Spread pick and prediction for Rays vs. Blue Jays
- Blue Jays -1.5 (4 units)
With only three games remaining in the regular season, the motivations here are very different. Toronto has everything to play for, the AL East Crown, home field in the later rounds, and bragging rights in a very difficult division. Meanwhile, the Rays are already mathematically eliminated from playoff contention and will begin to pack it up here in their loss. Bieber is starting for Toronto, and he has been strong lately as he has won three of his last four games, and he only have up two runs in the only loss in that stretch. Bieber has only walked five batters in over 35 innings and will control this game from the mound. Toronto needs this one more and will power their way to a win.
Take Toronto to cover the spread.
Over/Under Pick for Rays vs. Blue Jays
- Under (4 units)
The regular season is drawing to a close, and I expect to see more low-scoring games, especially in this one that features one playoff team and one team that will watch the postseason from home. Tampa Bay is out of the playoffs; there is no reason to take additional risks or look to run up the score as the team is already mentally packing their bags. As for the Blue Jays, if they can get an early lead, they are likely to rest some of their stars to keep them healthy for the Playoffs. Both starters have been solid lately with an ERA under 3.75. This will be a low-scoring game.
Take the under.
