Texas Rangers Seek Wildcard Spot
The Rangers have yet to name a starting pitcher for Tuesday night. There is a good chance Jacob Latz is on the mound. Latz conceded two runs in 4.1 innings against the Angels last week, resulting in a no-decision in a game Texas won. The veteran southpaw has been steady, recording a 3.13 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP, and a 1-0 record in 63.1 innings of work on the season. Latz gave up one run in 0.2 innings in his only career meeting against Arizona. The Rangers' bullpen has a sharp 3.67 ERA on the season.
The Texas Rangers appeared out of contention in the wildcard a few weeks ago, but are enjoying one of their best stretches of the season and are only 2.5 games out of a wildcard spot. Texas earned a series win against the Angels last week and issued a sweep against the Athletics before the series. The Rangers are 29-40 on the road.
Wyatt Langford has recorded three RBIs against the Diamondbacks this season. The 23-year-old is having a productive year, bashing 20 home runs with 57 RBIs. Jake Burger is expected back from the IL for this series. Burger has 12 home runs with 41 RBIs and a .691 OPS on the year. Corey Seager is out for this series, while Semien is done for the remainder of the season.
Texas is averaging 4.32 runs on the season, ranking them 19th. The pitching staff has an outstanding 3.43 ERA, which continues to rank #1.
Crismatt Remains Undefeated for Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks will have Nabil Crismatt on the mound in the second game of the series. Crismatt resumed his solid work in his recent effort, conceding two runs (one earned) in 5.2 innings against the Brewers and was credited with a win. The veteran has been sharp in all three of his starts, holding the opposition to five runs (three earned) in 14.2 innings pitched, resulting in a sparkling 1.84 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP accompanied by a 2-0 record. This marks his first career meeting against the Rangers.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are out of contention for a playoff spot, but are playing hard and winning games. They have won five of their past six series, including two wins in three road games against the Dodgers on the weekend. They nearly posted the sweep but lost by just one run on Sunday. They held the Dodgers to six runs in the series. The Diamondbacks are 34-32 at home.
Kete Marte had a mammoth series against Texas a few weeks ago, knocking in six runs. The star second baseman has 23 homers with 60 RBIs and a .916 OPS. Blaze Alexander generated 15 RBIs last month. The 26-year-old could be a breakout player next year. Alexander has issued 19 RBIs and a .774 OPS in 51 games. Adrian Del Castillo has been receiving more playing time. The 25-year-old has not been able to break out, posting 12 RBIs and a .677 OPS in 91 games. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. has a poor .200 OPS against the Rangers this season. The 31-year-old has clubbed 19 home runs with 80 RBIs and a .716 on the year.
Arizona is posting an average of 4.92 runs per game, rating them fourth. The pitching staff has recorded a 4.48 ERA, placing them 25th.
Pick: Texas Rangers ML (five units)
The Texas Rangers are determined to reach a wildcard spot. They stand just 2.5 games out of a wildcard spot. The Rangers are clicking, winning five consecutive games. They also stand at 4-1 in their past five road games entering Monday evening. The Arizona Diamondbacks are only 4-4 in their past eight games.
Furthermore, Diamondbacks pitcher Nabil Crismatt has only made three starts this season. Crismatt has been pitching out of the bullpen for the majority of his career. While Crismatt has been solid, he is not pitching deep into games, going 5.2 or fewer innings in all three outings this season. This is good news for Texas against a weak bullpen. The Diamondbacks bullpen has issued a poor 4.68 ERA on the season.
Total: Over (five units)
I expect this one to go over. Texas is piling on the runs, scoring a stunning 50 runs in its past five games entering Monday. They netted 15 runs in the series against the Diamondbacks last month. Crismatt is a pitcher Texas should hit. He has spent most of the past few seasons in the minor leagues.
In addition, Texas could be using a spot starter in Jacob Latz, or this could be a bullpen game for the Rangers. Arizona traded Naylor and Suarez, but their offensive production has not dipped. They have averaged 5.2 runs in their past ten games. Also, Arizona has scored six or more runs in six of its past nine home games. The over is 4-1 in the Rangers' past five road games.
