Texas will try to spoil the Guardians’ hopes
The Texas Rangers’ playoff hopes have ended, but they have a chance to thwart the playoff hopes of the Cleveland Guardians with a big weekend. The Rangers arrive in Cleveland this weekend with a record of 80-79. The Rangers have lost four of five games, including two of three to the Minnesota Twins to start the week. The Rangers dropped the series finale in Arlington on Thursday, 4-0. The Rangers’ offense was limited to just three hits in the loss, and starter Tyler Mahle went five innings and allowed five hits and one run with four strikeouts against his former team.

The Rangers will turn the ball over to veteran righty Merrill Kelly in game two of the series. Kelly was picked up from Arizona at the Trade Deadline to strengthen the Rangers’ rotation. Kelly is 12-9 in 32 starts, including 18 quality starts. He has allowed 157 hits in 184 innings of work and has given up 22 home runs. Kelly has an ERA of 3.52 and a WHIP of 1.11 this season. He has struck out 167 batters and walked 48. The Rangers have won three of Kelly’s last five starts. He is 6-4 with a 3.66 ERA on the road this season and has gone 1-2 with a 5.85 ERA in September.

Guardians on brink of stunning comeback
The Cleveland Guardians were all but out of the AL Playoff picture less than a month ago. As recently as September 10th, they were 10 games out of first place in the AL Central and seemingly out of the wildcard chase. Now, after taking two of three from the Tigers this week in Cleveland, they are tied atop the division heading into the weekend. On Thursday night, with a chance to take a two-game lead over the Tigers and get the series sweep, the Guardians fell 4-2. Starting pitcher Parker Messik went five innings and allowed six hits and four runs to take the loss. The Guardians’ offense was held to just five hits on the night.

The Guardians are in a fight both for the division title and a wildcard spot as they start play this weekend. They’ll turn to southpaw Logan Allen in game two of the series to keep both hopes alive. Allen is 8-11 in 29 starts this season, including seven quality starts. He has allowed 152 hits in 152.1 innings of work, with an ERA of 4.14 and a WHIP of 1.39. Allen has walked 60 and struck out 118 batters, and given up 18 home runs. The Guardians have lost three of Allen’s last five starts. He is 4-7 at home this season with a 3.92 ERA in 16 starts. Allen has gone 1-1 in September with a record of 1-1.
Key Injuries: RF Nolan Jones and 1B David Fry are out.
Rangers at Guardians
Money line Pick for Rangers vs. Guardians
- Guardians ML (4 units)
I don’t expect this to be a high-scoring game on Saturday. The veteran Kelly has been solid as of late, with the Rangers winning three of Kelly’s last five starts. He has 18 quality starts out of his 32 overall starts this season, so expect him to get fairly deep into the game. The Guardians’ Allen has an ERA under 4.00 at home this season and has had a solid September, with a record of 1-1 and an ERA of 2.00 in three starts. He also has the luxury of facing a depleted Rangers’ lineup with the likes of Corey Seager and Marcus Semien both lost for the season. Cleveland needs this one far more than the Rangers do, so expect them to treat this game like it's October.
Take the Guardians with the money line.
Over/Under Pick for Rangers vs. Guardians
- Under (4 units)
The Guardians have gone under the number in three of Allen’s last five starts. Allen also has a lower ERA at home this season, and an ERA more than two runs lower in September than his overall ERA. The Rangers have gone under the number in five straight games, as they continue to play with a compromised lineup. That will continue on Saturday.
Take the Under.
