The Texas Rangers (78-70) and the New York Mets (76-72) will close out their three-game series of interleague play on Sunday afternoon in this Rangers vs. Mets prediction. The first game of this set was played on Friday, with the Rangers winning 8-3. The second game was played on Saturday night (Note: This article was published before Saturday's results). Texas is planning on starting Jacob Latz (2.91 ERA) with New York sending out Nolan McLean (1.42 ERA). First pitch is set for 1:40 EST. Texas is Heating Up

The chase for the regular-season divisional title in the AL West has gotten interesting as of late. The Astros and Mariners are tied at the top, and the Texas Rangers now find themselves only two games out of first place as we head into mid-September. The Rangers are hot, as they have won each of their last five games heading into Saturday's game. They won their last game against the Astros, swept the Brewers, and then won their first game here on the road in New York.

Jacob deGrom led the Rangers to a win in the first game of this series as he made his way back to New York, while getting a standing ovation for his services there. DeGrom will not pitch here, but the offensive lineup, which has helped win their last five games, will all be available Sunday afternoon. In Friday's win, the Rangers got two hits from Josh Smith at the top of the lineup. Smith can play anywhere in the infield, but has lined up at shortstop lately while adding nine home runs and 33 RBIs on the year to go with his .254 batting average. Corey Seager is their top home run hitter, but he will miss this game with an injury, leaving Wyatt Langford as their top bat with 21 home runs and 60 RBIs.

Jacob Latz will make his seventh start of the season, but has made 23 other appearances out of the bullpen. His ERA is 2.91 to go with 66 strikeouts against 32 walks. He has started in each of his last three games; in his last outing he pitched 5.2 scoreless innings in a shutout against the Brewers.

Wheels Fall Off for the Mets

The New York Mets are scrambling at the worst point of the season, as they have lost each of their last seven games coming into Saturday. They dropped two against Cincinnati, then got swept by Philadelphia, and lost the first game of this set against Texas. New York has fallen 12 games behind the Phillies in the division, basically locking up the NL East for Philadelphia. The Mets are tied for the final playoff spot, but will need to right the ship if they want to hold onto it.

In their Friday night game against the Rangers, both Pete Alonso and Juan Soto had RBIs, but it did not matter as the team still lost 8-3. Soto bats second in their lineup as the right fielder. He leads the team with 39 home runs to go with 96 RBIs, and leads the team in stolen bases with 32. Francisco Lindor is not far behind Soto in stolen bases, as he has 29 on the year as their shortstop. Lindor bats leadoff and has added another 26 home runs and 77 RBIs. Pete Alonso leads the team in RBIs with 114, which is the second-highest total in all of Major League Baseball. Alonso also has 33 home runs to go with his .267 batting average while batting third as their first baseman.

New York will send Nolan McLean for his sixth start of the season. The 24-year-old right-hander has a strong 4-1 record through his first five outings, and has an even better 1.42 ERA. His strikeout to walk ratio is 33 to 10. In his last start, McLean gave up one run in five innings in a loss to the Phillies.

Texas Rangers vs. New York Mets picks and predictions

Moneyline Pick for Rangers vs. Mets

  • Mets (4 units)

We are going to fade the recent trends here, as no winning or losing streak lasts forever in the MLB, and the Mets will turn it around with their young ace on the mound. McLean will make his sixth start of the season in this one. He just recently joined the rotation, and the 24-year-old has been excellent with his 1.42 ERA. The Mets are willing to leave him out there, as he has had a decision either way in all of his five starts. McLean held the Phillies and Mariners scoreless in two of his first three starts of the year. The Rangers' offense is without Corey Seager and will not be able to muster enough run production before leaving town on Sunday.

Take the Mets to win

Over/Under Pick for Rangers vs. Mets

  • Under (4 units)

The pick for the total is not always married to the pick for the side, but if you like the Mets like I do here, you would also expect it to be a low-scoring game. New York is the play here, but their offense has not been consistent lately. They only scored three runs on five hits on Friday, and have not scored over four runs in any of their last seven games. McLean is their young sensation on the mound with a strong 1.42 ERA. The Rangers are staring Latz, and he just held the powerful Brewers scoreless in his last appearance. Expect a low-scoring afternoon game here.

Take the under.
