Toronto tops the charts.

The Blue Jays continue their series at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati against the Reds on Tuesday night. The Jays are coming off a weekend series with the Brewers in Toronto. The Jays dropped each of the first two games but avoided a sweep on Sunday, doubling up the Brewers 8-4. On Monday afternoon against the Reds, starter Chris Bassitt went six innings and allowed just five hits and two runs while striking out six. Unfortunately, the Jays' bats went silent against the Reds' pitching for the better part of the first eight innings. In the ninth, however, the Jays rallied for three runs to take a 4-2 lead. Bo Bichette capped a 4-for-4 day with a two-run homer to give the Jays the lead, and Danny Varsho followed that up with a solo blast of his own. Poised for a win, the Blue Jays coughed up three in the bottom half of the night, losing 5-4.

The Blue Jays are fending off two AL East powers, the Yankees and Red Sox, as the season heads into the final month. They lead both teams by three games heading into this series. The Jays will go with veteran righty Jose Berrios on Tuesday night. Berrios is 9-5 on the season in 27 starts, including 14 quality starts. He has allowed 144 hits in 152.2 innings of work and coughed up 22 home runs. Berrios has walked 49 batters and struck out 129. The Jays have won four of Berrios’ last five starts. He is 5-3 on the road this season in 14 starts, with an ERA of 3.43.

Key Injuries: RP Nick Sandlin, SP Alek Manoah, SP Max Scherzer, RF Anthony Santander, and RP Angel Bastardo are out.

Reds cling to faint hopes

The Cincinnati Reds made a late push at the end of August that had the team within shouting distance of an NL Wild Card spot. Since then, however, the Reds have soured, losing eight of ten games to close out the month. The Reds did pick up a win on Sunday, avoiding a sweep at the hands of the Cardinals at home. In game one against the visiting Jays on Monday, the Reds were one inning away from claiming victory, but the bullpen couldn't make their 2-1 lead hold up in the ninth, falling behind 4-2. Starter Hunter Greene went 6.1 innings, allowing five hits while striking out seven. The Reds rallied for three in the ninth, however, and walked off with a 5-4 win after Noelvi Marte singled home the winning run.

The Reds will need a red-hot September to have any shot of catching the Mets for the third and final playoff spot. The Reds trail the Mets by four games entering play on Monday, but time is running out. They’ll give the ball to southpaw Nick Lodolo on Tuesday night. Lodolo is 8-7 in 24 starts this season, including 13 quality starts. He has allowed 115 hits in 134.1 innings of work and has given up 17 home runs. Lodolo has walked 25 batters and struck out 130. He has an ERA of 3.22 and a WHIP of 1.04. The Reds have won three of Lodol’s last five starts. He is 3-2 at home with a 4.10 ERA in 11 games.

Key Injuries: C Tyler Stephenson, RP Graham Ashcraft, SP Wade Miley, and SP Chase Burns are out.

Blue Jays ML

The Blue Jays have been playing better overall baseball than the Reds and should flourish in a hitters’ park like The Great American Ballpark. The Jays are hitting nearly .270 as a team and have 162 home runs as a team. The Jays are a solid 27-16 vs. the National League this season. They face a Reds team that has dropped eight of ten games and is missing some key pieces, like catcher Stephenson and first baseman Steer. The Jays have also won four of Berrios’ last five starts. Lodolo is making just his second start since a stint on the IL, and has an ERA nearly a run higher at home than on the road.

Take the Blue Jays with the money line.

Over

Hard not to lean toward the over in games at Cincinnati. It remains one of the top five hitters' parks in the league, particularly for the long ball. The Jays come in having gone over the number in four of Berrios’ last five starts. As noted, Lodolo has an ERA a run higher at home than on the road. The Blue Jays are hitting nearly .270 as a team as well. The Jays have gone over the total in four of their last five games entering Monday, while the Reds have gone over in three of five.

Take the over.
