Toronto is looking at the top spot
The Toronto Blue Jays are inching toward the top spot in the American League, which would earn them home-field advantage throughout the AL Playoffs. The Jays reeled off six straight wins to move four games ahead of the Tigers for the AL’s best record. The streak was ended by the Rays in Tampa Bay on Wednesday in a 2-1 loss. The Jays then made it two straight losses after falling 4-0 on Thursday afternoon to the Rays. The Blue Jays had just four hits in the game. Starter Chris Bassitt took the loss, going 4.1 innings and allowing eight hits and three runs.
The Blue Jays have raced out to a comfortable lead over the Tigers with just over a week left in the regular season. A strong showing against the Royals this weekend can all but wrap up the top seed for the Jays. They’ll go with veteran righty Max Scherzer on Friday night. Scherzer is 5-3 on the season in 15 starts, including six quality starts. He has allowed 70 hits in 79.1 innings. He’s given up 16 home runs over that span. Scherzer has an ERA of 4.31 and a WHIP of 1.16. He has walked 22 and struck out 75 thus far. The Blue Jays have won four of Scherzer’s last five starts. He is 2-3 on the road in six starts, with an ERA of 4.19.
Key Injuries: RP Angel Bastardo, RP Nick Sandlin, SP Bowden Francis, and SS Bo Bichette are out.

Royals reduced to spoiler role
The Kansas City Royals will not be back in the playoffs in 2025, after closing last season with a flourish and earning a wildcard spot. This year, the best the team can hope for is to close with a winning record for the second straight season. On Thursday afternoon, the Royals lost 2-0 to the Mariners in Kansas City. The Royals scattered just five hits in the game and wasted a stellar effort from righty Stephen Kolek. Kolek allowed just three hits and one run over 6.1 innings of work.
The Royals can spoil the party for the Blue Jays this weekend. They will begin that task with righty Ryan Bergert on the hill. Bergert is 2-2 in 19 appearances this season. He has allowed just 61 hits in 76.1 innings of work, including eight home runs. Bergert has an ERA of 3.66 and a WHIP of 1.26. He has walked 35 batters and struck out 73. The Royals have lost four of Bergert’s last five starts. He is 0-0 on the road with an ERA of 3.13 in six starts.
Key Injuries: RP James McArthur is out.
Blue Jays vs. Royals PredictionÂ
Money line Pick for Blue Jays at RoyalsÂ
- Blue Jays ML (4 units)
The Blue Jays are closing the season on a high note, rolling through victories on their way to potentially the best record in the AL. They have a decided advantage on the mound Friday night. The Jays have won four of Scherzer’s last five starts. The Royals, on the other hand, have lost four of Bergert’s last five starts. The Royals don’t have much to play for at this point, while the Jays are trying to earn the top spot in the AL. The Jays are an impressive 57-40 under the lights this year, while the Royals are just 46-50 in night games. The Jays will be highly motivated to reduce their magic number with a win on Friday behind Scherzer.
Take the Jays with the money line.
Over/Under Pick for Blue Jays vs. RoyalsÂ
- Over (4 units)
The Jays have the highest batting average in the American League, hovering around .270. They have hit the ball well in Scherzer’s starts, going over the total in four of his last five starts. The Royals have hit well behind Bergert as well. They have gone over the number in four of Bergert’s last five starts. Expect another big night of scoring on Friday.
