Blue Jays Trying to Punch Ticket to AL Championship Series

Toronto’s bats were out in full force again in Game 2 of this series as they battered the Yankees into submission and put themselves on the brink of the AL Championship Series. The Blue Jays hope to carry their success across to border to the Big Apple as the series changes venues. In Game 2 Sunday, Toronto rapped out 15 hits as Daulton Varsho (four runs, four RBI) had four hits while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (two runs, four RBI) and Ernie Clement (run, three RBI) each had three. Varsho (his first and second), Clement (his first), Guerrero Jr. (his second), and George Springer (his first) each went deep in the win. Trey Yesavage (1-0) earned the win as he threw 5.1 innings, allowing no runs on no hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts, before handing off to the bullpen.

Shane Bieber takes the ball for his first postseason start of the year after making seven regular-season starts for the Blue Jays. He was 4-2 with a 3.57 ERA, a 1.017 WHIP, seven walks, and 37 strikeouts over 40.1 innings of work this season. Bieber earned the win in his last start, which came against the Rays at home on September 26. He threw five innings, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts, in a 4-2 Blue Jays triumph. In his last three starts, Bieber is 2-1 with a 2.60 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP, four walks, and 12 strikeouts over 17.1 innings of work. Bieber makes his sixth career start against the Yankees in this contest. He is 2-1 with a 4.11 ERA, a 1.141 WHIP, 11 walks, and 27 strikeouts over 30.2 innings of work against them. Bieber didn’t factor in the decision in his lone career start at Yankee Stadium, which came with the Guardians on May 3, 2023. He threw eight innings, allowing two runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts, in a game the Guardians dropped 4-3 in 10 innings.

New York Trying to Keep Season Alive

New York got off to a dismal start, digging a hole too deep to dig out of, and find themselves one loss from elimination. The Yankees now must pick up a win here at home to extend their season or head home for the offseason. Against Toronto in Game 2 on Sunday, New York trailed 11-0 after four innings, leaving them facing a massive deficit. The Yankees finished the game with 10 hits as Aaron Judge (two runs, RBI), Ben Rice (run, RBI) and Giancarlo Stanton (two RBI) each had a pair. Cody Bellinger (his first) went deep in the contest for the Yankees in the loss. Max Fried (0-1) was roughed up and took the loss as he allowed seven runs on eight hits with two walks and one strikeout over three innings of work.

Carlos Rodon takes the mound for his second start of the postseason after making 33 starts in the regular season for the Yankees. He closed the regular season 18-9 with a 3.09 ERA, a 1.049 WHIP, 73 walks and 203 strikeouts over 189.1 innings of work on the year. In the postseason, Rodon has no record with a 4.50 ERA, a 1.167 WHIP, three walks and six strikeouts in a game the Yankees eventually won 4-3. Rodon didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came against the Red Sox at home in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series at home Wednesday. He threw six innings, allowing three runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts in a 4-3 Yankees win. In his last three starts, Rodon is 2-0 with a 3.32 ERA, a 0.89 WHIP, five walks and 19 strikeouts over 19 innings of work. Rodon makes his 10th career start against the Blue Jays in this contest. He is 2-3 with a 4.72 ERA, a 1.51 WHIP, 21walks and 54 strikeouts over 47.2 innings of work against them. Rodon is 23-10 with a 3.43 ERA, a 1.092 WHIP, 85 walks, and 239 strikeouts over 236.1 innings in 41 career starts at Yankee Stadium.

Blue Jays vs. Yankees Pick

Moneyline Pick for Blue Jays vs. Yankees

  • Yankees -145 (4 units)

New York finds themselves staring elimination in the face here and needs to win three straight to advance. The Yankees actually got some hits with runners in scoring position in Game 2, going five of seven in those situations. New York, for their struggles with Toronto at Rogers Centre, went 4-2 at Yankee Stadium in the regular season. Rodon turned in a quality start in the postseason already, while Bieber is still only seven starts removed from Tommy John surgery. Toronto has its bats going but this is a desperate New York squad. Look for the Yankees to fight their way to a Game 4 as they prevail here.

Over/Under Pick for Blue Jays vs. Yankees

  • Over 7.5 (4 units)

Toronto has seen the over post an 88-71-5 mark in their 164 games on the year entering Monday. The Blue Jays are 3rd in the majors with 5.01 runs per game, and that number falls to 4.53 runs per game away from Rogers Centre. Toronto has an average total of 9.46 runs per game but that number drops to 9.27 runs per game on the road. New York has seen the under hit in 84 of their 167 games, with five pushes, this season entering Monday. The Yankees are first in the majors by averaging 5.19 runs per game, though they allow 4.28 runs per game, giving them an average of 9.47 runs per game. New York puts up 4.98 runs per game at home, while allowing four runs per game, giving them an average total of 8.91 runs per contest. After seeing 11 and 17 runs in the first two games of the series, look for this one to wind up over the mark as the Yankees pile up some runs offensively.
