Athletics Form & Recent Results

The Athletics head into Sunday's matchup in a brutal stretch, riding a ten-game losing streak prior to Saturday. Over their last five games alone, the skid has only gotten uglier as they dropped one at home to the Nationals, were swept in three straight by the White Sox in Chicago, and then followed that up with another loss to the Tigers in Detroit. The low point came in that 23–4 blowout against Washington, a game that got out of hand early and never really settled down. Even in that mess, left fielder Tyler Soderstrom managed to provide a rare bright spot, going 1-for-3 with a home run, scoring once, and driving in two of Oakland’s four runs.

Offensively, the A’s have had a few players producing power despite the team’s overall struggles. Catcher Shea Langeliers is their top home-run threat with 22 on the season, while first baseman Nick Kurtz isn’t far behind with 20. Kurtz has also been their most consistent run producer, leading the club with 66 RBI, and he tops the team in batting average as well at .266. The bigger issue, though, has been what’s happening on the mound. Over the last five games, the A's pitching staff has been crushed for an average of 10.2 runs per game, which explains why losses have been piling up so quickly. In fact, they’ve gone 1–14 in their last 15 games overall, and July has been especially harsh, with a 1–10 record for the month.

Washington Form & Recent Results

Washington comes into this matchup riding a one-game winning streak, although their recent form has been a little uneven overall. Before Saturday, the Nationals had lost three of their previous five games, but they looked completely locked in on Friday in Sacramento, blowing past the Athletics 23–4. First baseman Andres Chaparro was right in the middle of everything, finishing 4-for-5 with two singles and two home runs. He also crossed the plate four times and drove in eight runs, putting together one of the biggest offensive performances Washington has had all season. On the mound, Cade Cavalli gave them exactly what they needed as well, going six innings while giving up just four hits and two earned runs. He didn’t issue a walk and piled up nine strikeouts, helping Washington stay in control from start to finish.

That win was also a good snapshot of what Washington can look like when the offense clicks, because they ended the night with 21 hits, four homers, and 39 total bases. Over the season as a whole, right fielder James Wood has been their top power threat, leading the team with 28 home runs. Behind him, Luis Garcia Jr. and CJ Abrams have both reached the 20-homer mark, giving the Nationals a solid secondary punch in the lineup. Abrams and Garcia have also been the most productive run drivers, tied for the team lead with 68 RBI apiece, and Garcia has been their most consistent hitter by average as well, batting .284. Recently, Washington’s pitching has kept games fairly manageable, allowing about four runs per game over their last five. In July they’ve gone 5–6 and they’re 8–7 over their last 15 games, showing they’ve been hovering around .500 with flashes of strong play.

Key Stats

  • Washington’s Luis Garcia Jr. this season: 20 HRs, 68 RBI, .284 AVG
  • Athletics’ Nick Kurtz this season: 20 HRs, 66 RBI, .266 AVG

Washington vs. Athletics Picks and Prediction

The A’s have been taking it on the chin recently, and it hit a low point Friday night when they were blown out 23–4 by the Nationals at home to give them their tenth straight loss. With the second half of the season just getting underway, they’re in real need of a turnaround and are looking to use these next few games as a chance to reset and start stacking wins. Washington is set to hand the ball to left-hander Foster Griffin, who’s been excellent this year, going 10–2 with a 2.77 ERA. The A’s, meanwhile, will counter with lefty Jacob Lopez, who’s 4–3 but has struggled overall, carrying a 6.83 ERA on the season. Final Score Prediction, Washington Nationals win 7-3.
