The Hawks’ winning streak is over
The Atlanta Hawks (24-26; 25-25 ATS; 25-25 O/U) put an end to their four-game winning streak last Thursday. After beating the Memphis Grizzlies 124-122, the Phoenix Suns 110-103, the Indiana Pacers 132-116, and the Boston Celtics 117-106, the Hawks suffered a 104-86 home loss to the Houston Rockets.

The Hawks made just 36.5% of their field goals last Thursday. They went 12-for-39 from downtown and earned a paltry seven free throws. Moreover, the Hawks allowed a whopping 22 offensive rebounds. CJ McCollum led the way with 23 points and five rebounds, while Nickeil Alexander-Walker had 20 points and five boards.
Atlanta was quite shorthanded last time out. Jalen Johnson (22.9 PPG, 10.5 RPG, 7.9 APG), Zaccharie Risacher (11.2 PPG), Onyeka Okongwu (16.3 PPG, 7.9 RPG), and Kristaps Porzingis (17.1 PPG, 5.1 RPG) were all out. Johnson should return for Saturday’s game against Indiana, but the other three guys are all considered doubtful.
The Hawks are ninth in the Eastern Conference, two and a half games ahead of the No. 11 seed. Atlanta scores 114.2 points per 100 possessions (21st in the NBA) and surrenders 115.2 points in return (tied for 16th). The Hawks make 37.1% of their shots from beyond the 3-point line (6th).
The Pacers hope to stay on track
The Indiana Pacers (12-36; 24-24 ATS; 18-30 O/U) have won two of their previous three games overall, sandwiching a 132-116 defeat at the Hawks with a pair of wins over the Oklahoma City Thunder 117-114 on the road and the Chicago Bulls 113-110 at home.
The Pacers started their four-game homestand last Wednesday, beating the Bulls as slight 1.5-point underdogs. Indiana outscored Chicago 37-25 in the fourth quarter and finished the game with 15 triples out of 36 attempts from deep. Pascal Siakam led the charge with 20 points and five assists, while Andrew Nembhard had 18 points and nine dishes.
Tyrese Haliburton continues to recover from right Achilles surgery, and he’s expected to miss the entire season, while Obi Toppin (foot) might return in March. Siakam has been the team’s best player so far this season, averaging 23.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 4.0 assists. Nembhard tallies 17.4 points and 7.4 assists per game.
The Pacers are last in the East, 11 games behind the No. 10 seed. Indiana scores just 109.0 points per 100 possessions (30th in the NBA) and allows 117.0 points in return (21st). The Pacers make 34.2% of their shots from beyond the arc (tied for 25th).
Hawks vs. Pacers Pick
Spread Pick for Hawks vs. Pacers
- Indiana Pacers (4 units)
The Hawks are not a great rebounding team by any stretch of the imagination, and with Kristaps Porzingis, Onyeka Okongwu, and Zaccharie Risacher all on the shelf, Atlanta’s frontcourt is pretty thin. Hereof, I think the Pacers stand a chance of beating the Hawks in this game.
Last Monday, the Hawks outscored the Pacers 72-52 in the second half. Both Johnson and Okongwu were in the starting lineup, though CJ McCollum led the way with 23 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists off the bench. The Hawks went 18-for-43 from downtown, and I expect a better defensive display from Indiana this time around.
The Pacers are third in the NBA in opposing 3-point percentage (34.4%). No team allows fewer 3-pointers per 100 possessions than Indiana (11.3).
Over/Under Pick for Hawks vs. Pacers
- Over (4 units)
The Hawks play at the second-fastest pace in the NBA, notching 102.1 possessions per 48 minutes. They lean on 3-pointers a lot, and the Hawks’ defense is arguably far from an elite level. Even the Pacers can score against Atlanta, so give me the over on the total.
The Pacers register 100.7 possessions per 48 minutes (11th in the league). Their offense has been awful for most of the season, but the Pacers have weapons to hurt the Hawks’ defense. The over is 17-3 in the last 20 encounters between Atlanta and Indiana, and I have to ride this betting trend.
