The Hawks are fighting bravely in Trae Young’s absence
The Atlanta Hawks (5-5; 4-6 ATS; 4-6 O/U) have gone 3-2 SU and ATS since Trae Young hit the sidelines with the knee injury. They just finished a three-game homestand, sandwiching a 109-97 defeat against the Toronto Raptors with a couple of wins over the Orlando Magic 127-112 and the Los Angeles Lakers 122-102.

Last Saturday, the Hawks held Luka Doncic to 22 points and forced the Lakers into 20 turnovers. Atlanta shot 51.6% from the field (16-for-39 from deep) while posting a sensational 37/11 assist-to-turnover ratio. Seven Hawks scored in double figures, and Mouhamed Gueye led the way with 21 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.
Jalen Johnson sat out the Lakers game with a quad injury. He’s been the Hawks’ best player this season, averaging 20.6 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 4.9 assists. The Hawks score 113.5 points per 100 possessions (22nd in the NBA) and surrender 113.3 points in return (tied for 8th).
The Clippers hope to avoid the fifth straight L
The Los Angeles Clippers (3-6; 1-8 ATS; 5-4 O/U) are one of the biggest disappointments of the young season. They will try to stop a four-game slide when the Hawks come to town. After a pair of home defeats against the Miami Heat 120-119 and the Oklahoma City Thunder 126-107, the Clippers dropped consecutive games against the Phoenix Suns, 115-102 and 114-103.
The Clippers visited the Suns last Thursday and scored just 102 points on 44.3% shooting from the field (10-for-31 from deep). Two days later, the Clippers made 53.2% of their field goals (10-for-33 from deep), but it wasn’t enough. Ivica Zubac has amassed 44 points and 26 rebounds over those two encounters with Phoenix.
Kawhi Leonard (24.3 PPG, 5.7 RPG) hasn’t played against the Suns due to an ankle injury, and he’ll miss a few more games, according to the Clippers head coach, Tyronn Lue. At the moment, the Clippers rank 21st in the NBA in adjusted offensive efficiency (114.4 points per 100 possessions) and 27th in adjusted defensive efficiency (120.0).
Hawks vs. Clippers Pick
Spread Pick for Hawks vs. Clippers
- Atlanta Hawks (4 units)
There are some moving parts in this game. The Hawks listed five players as questionable, including Jalen Johnson, Kristaps Porzingis, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. On the other side, the Clippers miss Kawhi Leonard.
I covered Friday’s clash between LA and Phoenix, and I noted that something’s wrong with this Clippers team. Their defense has been terrible this season, and the Clippers turn the ball over on 15.6 percent of their possessions.
I have to see some improvement before I back the Clippers against any team in the league. LA has gone 1-8 ATS thus far. Hopefully, the Hawks will get Johnson or Porzingis back. Porzingis didn’t play against the Lakers due to illness.
The Hawks are sixth in the league in opposing turnover percentage (14.4%) and fourth in opposing 3-point percentage (32.7%). They should have enough weapons to slow the Clippers down and make this game interesting to watch down the stretch.
Over/Under Pick for Hawks vs. Clippers
- Under (4 units)
The Clippers play at the slowest pace in the NBA (95.8 possessions per 48 minutes), but their defense has been awful thus far. On the other side, the Hawks lean on their defense while tallying 101.5 possessions per 48 minutes (13th in the league).
The Hawks are 27th in 3-point rate (.371) and 21st in 3-point percentage (34.1%). Three of their last four contests have gone under the total, and I would ride this betting trend. Atlanta will put a lot of pressure on LA’s backcourt, and the Clippers cannot afford to rush things in this matchup.
