Atlanta a dangerous team entering the playoffs

The Atlanta Hawks appeared to be waving the white flag when they dealt Trae Young to the Washington Wizards at the NBA Trade Deadline. Quite the opposite happened, as the Hawks could wrap up the fifth seed with a victory in this game. Atlanta has vastly improved on the defensive end of the floor. The Hawks are tied for ninth in the league in defensive efficiency by Hollinger's NBA Team Statistics and are allowing 115.7 points per contest. Atlanta is seven games above .500 on the road and has just two playoff series victories in the last nine years. On Friday. Atlanta outscored Cleveland by 18 points in the third quarter to pull away for a 124-102 home victory.

First time All-Star Jalen Johnson has become the focal point of Atlanta’s offensive attack. Johnson leads the Hawks in scoring (22.5 ppg), rebounds (10.3 rpg), and assists (7.9 apg). Nickel Alexander-Walker provides plenty of three-point shooting ability and is averaging a career-high 20.8 points per game. Veteran G C.J. McCollum (18.7 ppg) still has some gas left in the tank and seems to be reinvigorated since being acquired by the Hawks.

Key Injury Report for Atlanta:

  • No significant injuries to report

Miami headed to the Play-In Tournament

The Miami Heat have fallen from the ranks of the Eastern Conference elite and have been bounced from the first round of the playoffs in consecutive years. The Heat have been unable to attract marquee free agents to South Beach and could be forced to make a change in the front office. Miami ranks 11th in the league in defensive efficiency by Hollinger's NBA Team Statistics and is giving up 118.6 points per contest. The Heat have won 25 of 40 home games and have clinched a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament. On Friday, Miami assisted on 37 of 49 made field goals and shot a scorching 60 percent overall  during a 140-117 road triumph against lowly Washington.

First-time All-Star Norman Powell leads seven Miami players in double figures with 21.7 points per game. Tyler Herro has appeared in less than half of the Heat’s games and is scoring 21.0 points on average. Bam Adebayo (20.0 ppg) erupted for 83 points against Washington last month and leads Miami in rebounding (10.0 rpg). Jaime Jaquez Jr. (15.2 ppg) provides plenty of scoring punch off the Heat bench.

Key Injury Report for Miami:

  • Dru Smith (DTD) - foot
  • Norman Powell (DTD) - groin
  • Davion Mitchell (DTD) - shoulder
  • Tyler Herro (DTD) - foot

Atlanta vs Miami Pick

Atlanta vs Miami Spread Pick

  • Pick: Atlanta Spread

Miami has defeated Atlanta in two of their first three meetings this season, with neither team winning on their home floor. The Hawks will clinch the fifth seed with a victory in this game, while the Heat could move up to ninth with a win and a Charlotte loss. Atlanta is 23-17 ATS on the road and will cover against a less motivated Miami squad.

Atlanta vs Miami Over/Under Pick

  • Pick: Under

These two teams rank in the top four of the league in tempo, but that is expected to change as they gear up for the postseason. The Heat are the fifth most profitable team for over bettors with a 45-36 O/U record. However, Miami ranks 11th in the league in defensive efficiency and Atlanta is much improved on that end of the floor. Take the under.

Final Score Prediction: Atlanta Hawks win 123-112
