The Hawks are coming off a heavy loss
The Atlanta Hawks (20-22; 21-21 ATS; 22-20 O/U) put an end to their three-game winning streak last Tuesday. After a 117-100 home victory over the New Orleans Pelicans and a couple of road wins against the Denver Nuggets 110-87 and the Golden State Warriors 124-111, the Hawks suffered a heavy 141-116 defeat at the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Hawks were slight 1.5-point underdogs in LA, but they gave up a whopping 81 first-half points. Atlanta shot 45.0% from the field (13-for-46 from downtown), and Nickeil Alexander-Walker led the way with 26 points and four rebounds.
Both Kristaps Porzingis (17.1 PPG, 5.1 RPG) and Zaccharie Risacher (11.2 PPG) sat out the Lakers game due to injuries, missing the third straight contest each. Jalen Johnson (23.4 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 8.1 APG) hit just five of his 17 field goals, finishing with 13 points and six assists, while CJ McCollum (18.8 PPG) scored 25 points off the bench.
The Hawks score 115.0 points per 100 possessions (18th in the NBA) and allow 115.6 points in return (16th). They are 13th in the league in 3-point rate (.428) and fifth in 3-point percentage (37.1%), but just one team takes fewer free throws per 100 possessions than Atlanta (20.8).
The Trail Blazers hope to avoid their third straight L
The Portland Trail Blazers (19-22; 22-18-1 ATS; 21-20 O/U) put an end to their five-game winning streak last Sunday, finishing their four-game homestand with a 123-114 defeat to the New York Knicks. Portland had a one-point lead with 5:24 remaining in the fourth quarter, when the Knicks launched a 9-0 run.
Two days later, the Trail Blazers lost at the Golden State Warriors 119-97, failing to cover a 10.5-point spread. Portland shot just 43.4% from the field (14-for-47 from deep) and committed 22 turnovers. Shaedon Sharpe led the way for the Blazers with 19 points.
Deni Avdija (26.1 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 6.9 APG) suffered a back injury against the Knicks and didn’t play against the Warriors. Jerami Grant (20.0 PPG) missed 14 straight games with an Achilles injury and was listed as doubtful last Tuesday.
The Trail Blazers score 114.0 points per 100 possessions (22nd in the NBA) and surrender 117.0 points in return (20th). They rank fifth in the league in 3-point rate (.461) and fourth in free-throw rate (.298). However, the Blazers hit just 33.9% of their shots from deep (29th).
Hawks vs. Trail Blazers Pick
Spread Pick for Hawks vs. Trail Blazers
- Atlanta Hawks (4 units)
There are some moving parts in this game, so you have to keep tracking the injury report. Deni Avdija is a key player on this Portland team, and his eventual absence would be a massive blow for the Trail Blazers. On the other side, the Hawks’ frontcourt would be thin should Kristaps Porzingis and Zaccharie Risacher both remain on the sidelines.
Anyway, I expect the Hawks to bounce back from that ugly loss against the Lakers. Their defense fell apart following a three-game winning streak, during which the Hawks had been playing solid defense. Atlanta’s 3-point shooting has been excellent this season, and the Hawks make 56.0% of their 2-pointers (tied for 7th in the NBA). With CJ McCollum coming off the bench, the Hawks’ backcourt looks pretty deep.
Over/Under Pick for Hawks vs. Trail Blazers
- Over (4 units)
The Trail Blazers are third in the league in offensive rebound percentage (30.4%), but their defensive rebound percentage is the second-worst in the NBA (71.4%). On the other side, the Hawks rank 21st in defensive rebound percentage (73.4%) and 27th in offensive rebound percentage (22.1%).
Both teams prefer to play fast and push the ball in transition whenever they can. Atlanta registers 102.4 possessions per 48 minutes (2nd in the league), and Portland records 101.0 possessions per 48 minutes (9th).
Hereof, I will take the over, though I’m a bit concerned by Deni Avdija’s injury. Without Avdija, the Trail Blazers’ offense struggled a lot against the Warriors last Tuesday.
