The Hawks aim for their third straight win
The Atlanta Hawks started their four-game road trip last Monday, outlasting the LA Clippers 105-102. Two days after a 122-102 thrashing of the Los Angeles Lakers at home, the Hawks upset the odds at Intuit Dome and handed the Clippers their fifth straight loss.
The Hawks held the Clippers to 43.9% shooting from the field (12-for-38 from deep). Atlanta made 45.2% of its field goals (13-for-34 from downtown) while posting an excellent 30/12 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Vit Krejci scored a career-high 28 points last Monday, going 8-for-10 from beyond the arc. Kristaps Porzingis had 20 points and four assists, while Jalen Johnson posted a line of 16 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists.
Johnson is having a breakthrough season, averaging 20.6 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 4.9 assists. The Hawks score 113.4 points per 100 possessions (22nd in the NBA) and allow 113.0 points in return (8th). They miss Trae Young (knee), while Nickeil Alexander-Walker (back) is listed as questionable.
The Kings need more from their defense
The Sacramento Kings were looking to snap a two-game skid on Tuesday night. In their previous two outings, the Kings have suffered heavy defeats against the Oklahoma City Thunder, 132-101, and the Minnesota Timberwolves, 144-117.
Sacramento made just 41.3% of its field goals against OKC. The Kings committed 17 turnovers and were outscored 60-34 in the paint. Russell Westbrook accounted for 24 points and nine assists, but he also had seven turnovers.
Against Minnesota, the Kings couldn’t stop anything. The Timberwolves were scoring at will while outscoring Sacramento 64-46 in the paint. The Kings shot 44.4% from the field (13-for-29 from deep), and Zach LaVine led the charge with 26 points.
Sacramento scores 112.4 points per 100 possessions (23rd in the league) and surrenders 120.7 points in return (27th). The Kings are without Keegan Murray (thumb), while Domantas Sabonis (ribs) was questionable for Tuesday’s clash against Denver.
Hawks vs. Kings Pick
Spread Pick for Hawks vs. Kings
- Atlanta Hawks (4 units)
Atlanta misses its best player, but given the way the Kings have been playing, I can only look at the Hawks in this game. The Kings’ defense has been awful so far this season. Sacramento is 29th in the NBA in opposing 2-point percentage and 19th in opposing 3-point percentage (36.2%).
The Hawks don’t lean on 3-pointers a lot, but they will attack the paint all night long against the Kings. Jalen Johnson is poised for another strong performance, and the Hawks will rely on their defense to get the job done. Atlanta is fourth in the league in opposing 3-point percentage (32.6%) and 10th in defensive turnover percentage (14.1%).
Over/Under Pick for Hawks vs. Kings
- Under (4 units)
The Kings are fourth in the league in pace (102.6 possessions per 48 minutes), but they might look to slow things a bit on the second night of a back-to-back. Remember that Sacramento had a tough matchup against Denver on Tuesday night.
The Hawks register 100.8 possessions per 48 minutes (14th in the NBA). With Trae Young on the shelf, the Hawks lean on their defense, so I will take the under in this game. Nine of the previous 10 encounters between Atlanta and Sacramento and four of the Hawks’ last five games have gone under the total.
