Atlanta Hawks Trying to Get Above .500
Atlanta came away with a four-point win at Indiana on Monday, getting back on track after Saturday's disappointing loss to New Orleans. The Hawks haven't been able to put together consecutive victories lately, although their win over Cleveland last week was another encouraging result. Atlanta has shown it can compete offensively, but the defense has been inconsistent. The Hawks will try to carry Monday's result into Washington rather than follow another victory with a loss.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker (19.3 points per game) is Atlanta's leading scorer. Jalen Johnson has been doing much of the work elsewhere, averaging 9.0 rebounds and 7.9 assists, both team highs. Johnson is questionable for Wednesday, which makes his availability important for the Hawks. Atlanta averages 116.1 points per game and allows 114.0. The team is making 45.4% of its field goals and 32.8% from three-point range. Better shooting and a more reliable defensive effort would help Atlanta get its record above .500.
Injuries: Mouhamed Gueye and Henri Veesaar are out. Jock Landale and Jalen Johnson are questionable.

Washington Wizards Building Around Their Defense
Washington returned from Orlando with a 103-94 win Monday. That came after the Wizards held Charlotte to 79 points in a 95-79 victory Friday. The results followed back-to-back losses to Charlotte and Cleveland. Rather than needing a big scoring night, Washington has been able to win with its defense. Another home victory would give the Wizards three straight and put more distance between them and Atlanta in the standings.
Anthony Davis leads Washington with 22.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. Trae Young is the assist leader at 10.2 per contest. The Wizards score 110.5 points while allowing 107.4, a stronger defensive mark than Atlanta's. Washington shoots 46.7% from the field, although its 29.3% three-point shooting has been a weakness. Alex Sarr is questionable, leaving the Wizards with some uncertainty up front.
Injuries: Reece Beekman, Tristan Vukcevic and Justin Champagnie are out. Alex Sarr and Anthony Gill are questionable.
Key To The Game
Atlanta must handle Davis near the basket. Johnson's status matters because the Hawks rely on him for rebounds and passing. Washington has been keeping opponents in check, but Young and Davis still need to produce enough offense. Atlanta must avoid the defensive mistakes that hurt it in New Orleans.
Atlanta Hawks vs Washington Wizards Game Pick
- Washington Wizards
The Hawks have enough offense to compete here, and their road record is respectable. Washington, though, has looked more comfortable over its last two games. Holding Charlotte to 79 points and Orlando to 94 gave the Wizards a way to win without chasing big scores. Davis presents another concern for Atlanta, especially if Johnson cannot play. Young's passing should also help Washington find good shots when the game tightens up. Atlanta has been inconsistent from one night to the next, while the Wizards have started to settle down. I'll take Washington at home.
Atlanta Hawks vs Washington Wizards Over/Under Pick
- Under
Washington's recent games have taken a different shape from Atlanta's. The Wizards scored 95 against Charlotte and 103 against Orlando, but their defense carried both wins. Atlanta has a higher scoring average, although the Hawks were held to 99 points in New Orleans and managed 108 at Indiana. Johnson's questionable status could take away a key passer and rebounder, making it harder for Atlanta to build an offensive rhythm. Washington's outside shooting hasn't been particularly strong either. I expect the Wizards to keep this game under control rather than trade baskets all night. Take the under.
