Boston Surviving Despite Losses

The Boston Celtics have been championship contenders for the better part of the last six years, including two trips to the finals and one championship in 2023-24. This season, expectations are lower after the team lost star forward Jayson Tatum to an Achilles injury in last year’s playoffs and then parted ways with veterans Jrue Holliday, Kristaps Porzingis, and Al Horford in the offseason. The team still has all-stars Jaylen Brown and Derrick White, however, and the pair delivered big on Tuesday night, combining for 63 points, including a season-high 42 points from Brown, in a 123-117 win over the Knicks in Boston. The win was the second straight for the Celtics and seventh in their last ten games.

The Celtics have had to adjust their style this season with the loss of Tatum and others. The team is far less imposing on the offensive end. The Celtics are 21st in the NBA in points per game this season. They are seventh in offensive efficiency and 16th in effective field goal percentage. The Celtics, once the most prolific 3-point shooting team in the league, are ranked just 17th in 3-point shooting. They are 11th in scoring margin this season. The Celtics’ defense has shown improvement. The team is 2nd in points allowed per game. The C’s are 15th in defensive efficiency and 5th in opponents’ field goal efficiency. The Celtics are 18th in 3-point defense. The Celtics are ninth in total rebounding and first in fewest turnovers per game. The Celtics still prefer a perimeter offense, ranked just 28th in the league in points in the paint.

Key Injuries for Celtics: F Jaylen Brown is a game-time decision.

Wizards Slow Rebuild

The Washington Wizards have won a combined 33 games over the last two seasons and haven’t been to the playoffs since the 2020-21 season. This year, things don’t appear to be any better with the Wizards winning just three of their first 20 games. The Wizards have lost two of their last three games, including a 121-102 loss to the Sixers in Philadelphia on Tuesday night. The Wizards shot just 40 percent from the floor and allowed the Sixers to shoot 43 percent from beyond the arc in the loss. Tristan Vukcevic finished with 16 points off the bench, one of seven Wizards in double-figures against the Sixers.

The Wizards’ inexperienced roster has a lot of work to do on both ends of the floor to move up the ranks. The Wizards are 24th in the NBA in points per game this season. They are just 27th in offensive efficiency and 20th in effective field goal percentage. The Wizards have shot well from beyond the arc, ranking eighth in 3-point shooting. They are, however, just 22nd in the league in points in the paint. Defensively, the Wizards are last in scoring defense and last in defensive efficiency. They are 23rd in opponents’ field goal efficiency. The Wizards are 23rd in rebounding and 28th in turnovers.

Key Injuries for Wizards:  G Bilal Coulibaly, C Alex Sarr, F Corey Kispert, and G Tre Johnson are out.

Celtics vs. Wizards Pick

Point Spread Pick for Celtics at Wizards

  • Celtics -9.5 (4 units)

The Celtics have the edge in this matchup in a few key categories. They are far superior to the Wizards in rebounding, ranked 9th compared to the Wizards’ 23rd ranking. The Wizards won’t be helped by the fact that leading scorer and rebounder Sarr will miss this contest. The Celtics also possess the 2nd best scoring defense in the league, while the Wizards are dead last. The Celtics’ strides on the defensive end will shine through here, limiting the Wizards’ 24th-ranked scoring offense. The Wizards are too sloppy, too inexperienced, and lack the firepower to take down a Celtics team that is 9-6 in Eastern Conference play this season.

Take the Celtics -9.5

Over/Under Pick for Celtics vs. Wizards

  • Under 230.5 (4 units)

As noted above, the Celtics have focused hard on the defensive end. They are second in points allowed per game and have limited the opposition’s efficiency, ranking fifth in that department. The Celtics are far less explosive offensively this season without Tatum. They are just 21st in points per game and have fallen to 17th in 3-point shooting. They’ll limit the Wizards’ second-chance opportunities and pull out a win that will stay under the total comfortably.

Take the under.
