Celtics Look for Second Cup Win
The Boston Celtics won their first NBA Cup game over the surprisingly strong 76ers, and now have a chance to go 2-0 in group play with a win over the Magic. The Pistons and Nets are the two other squads in their group, which means if Boston can pull out a win here, they will put themselves in a solid spot to advance to the next round. Boston recently dropped two straight games, but bounced back with a win last time out over Washington. Jaylen Brown led the way with 35 points in the win over the Wizards.
Jaylen Brown knows how to step his game up when needed, as he does have a Finals MVP on his resume, but he will need to sustain that high level of play this whole season for Boston to compete in the East. Brown has been asked to do more with Tatum out with his torn Achilles, and Brown has answered by leading the team with 27.7 PPG to start the year. Brown has scored 30 or more in four of his last five games. The other three scorers averaging in double figures are all guards, with Payton Pritchard leading that group with 15.3 PPG after taking over the starting point guard spot this season. Anfernee Simons has been getting 14.3 PPG off the bench, while Derrick White continues his solid play, getting 14.1 PPG.
Neemias Queta starts in the post as an athletic rim-protecting big, with Josh Minott filling out the other forward spot, focusing on his defense and energy to help the backcourt. Boston ranks 3rd in offensive efficiency and 12th in defensive efficiency according to dunksandthrees.com. The Celtics rank 29th in the league in tempo based upon possessions per game.

Magic Open NBA Cup Play
The Orlando Magic will be playing their first game in the NBA Cup, and were able to draw a favorable matchup, getting the Celtics at home as opposed to heading to Boston. The Magic just had a chance to grab a strong win on national television on Tuesday on NBC, as they took on the Atlanta Hawks without Trae Young, but could not capitalize in the 15-point loss. Orlando has been slow out of the gates this season, with their only wins coming over Eastern Conference teams that are not projected to make deep runs in the playoffs. In their recent game against Atlanta, they were led by Paolo Banchero, who scored 22 points in the loss.
Banchero is their former number one overall pick, who is still just 22 years old. He is looking to prove that he can lead his team to a deep playoff run this season. So far, Banchero is leading Orlando with 23.1 PPG, 9.5 RPG, and 4.5 APG. He is 6'10 and 250, but handles the ball like a guard and can attack the basket from the perimeter. The Magic traded away numerous assets in the offseason to acquire Desmond Bane from Memphis, but the return has been slow so far, as he is only averaging 13.9 PPG this season, down from 19.2 PPG last year with the Grizzlies. Franz Wagner is still putting up solid numbers as a versatile forward with 22.0 PPG and 5.5 RPG.
Jalen Suggs is a reliable point guard, but he does not score much with his 10.5 PPG. Wendell Carter Jr. and Tristan da Silva get the rest of the minutes in the frontcourt next to Banchero and Wagner. The Magic rank 20th in offensive efficiency and 9th in defensive efficiency. Orlando ranks 8th in the league in possessions per game, playing at a faster pace of play than the Celtics.

Celtics vs. Magic Picks and Predictions
Spread pick for Celtics vs. Magic
- Celtics +3.5 (5 units)
The Orlando offense stalled out against the Hawks and will struggle even more here against this tough Boston defense. There was no flow to their offense, as Banchero and Wagner can be ball stoppers on the perimeter, leading to dead possessions when they cannot score in isolation. Suggs is more of a combo-guard than a true point, and Bane has not been the knockdown outside shooter they hoped they were trading for. Boston has taken a step back from previous seasons, but Jaylen Brown will still be the best player on the floor, and any of their three scoring guards behind him can get hot in a hurry. Anfernee Simons is getting more comfortable in his new role, and the Celtics will be able to keep this one close on the road.
Take the Celtics with the points.
Over/Under Pick for Celtics vs. Magic
- Under 226.5 (4 units)
There will be a feeling-out period early in this matchup, especially considering these teams will be playing back-to-back games against each other. The NBA Cup has created some scheduling issues like this, as these teams will meet again on Sunday. Outside that fact, Boston has adopted a new style of play this season, slowing the game down and relying on their creative guards to find shots in the halfcourt. Tatum is out, and he could create a shot on his under in under four seconds, but now Boston needs to work a little harder for their buckets. Orlando is coming off a game against Atlanta, where they looked sluggish on offense. Orland has gone under in two of their last three, and will go under again here.
Take the under.
