Nets searching for first win
Not much is expected of the Nets this season, as they opened with an over/under season win total of only 20.5 on ESPN Bet.
Brooklyn opened the season with a 136-117 road loss to the Charlotte Hornets, followed by a 131-124 home loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night. In the loss to Cleveland, Brooklyn trailed 108-86 heading into the fourth quarter but went on a 34-13 run over the next 8:12 to cut the lead to one before running out of steam late.

Through the first two games, Cam Thomas leads the team with 24 points and 5.5 assists per game, and Michael Porter Jr. is second in scoring, averaging 21.5 ppg. Nic Claxton is third in scoring with 13.5 ppg and has grabbed a team-best 6.5 rebounds.
Rookie forward Danny Wolf (ankle) is out for this game.
Is Wembanyama the best player in the world?
The Spurs came into the season with an over/under win total set at 44.5 by ESPN Bet. On the floor, they are undefeated after hammering Dallas 125-92 and beating New Orleans 120-116 in overtime. San Antonio is now looking forward to three straight home games against teams they should be favored to beat in Brooklyn, Toronto, and Miami.
DeβAaron Fox has missed the first two games with a hamstring injury and is not expected to play Sunday, along with C Luke Kornet (ankle) and F Jeremy Sochan (wrist). Without Fox in the lineup, Victor Wembanyama has led the way with 34.5 points, 13 rebounds, and six blocks per game. That includes a 40-point game on opening night against Dallas. In their win over New Orleans, Wembanyama fouled out in 32 minutes, but blocked nine shots. Stephon Castle (19 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 6.0 apg), Devin Vassell (18 ppg, 1.5 spg), and rookie Dylan Harper (14 ppg) are off to strong starts as well.
Nets vs. Spurs predictions
Spread Pick for Nets vs. Spurs:
- San Antonio Spurs -11.5 (4 units)
Itβs only been two games, but the Spurs are No. 1 in the NBA in defensive efficiency and ninth on the offensive end. As for the Nets, they are 16th on offense but 29th on defense. Even with the small sample size, I think weβll consistently see the Spurs taking strides forward defensively, led by the 7-5 Wemby protecting the paint, while the Nets roster should continue to struggle on that end and possibly regress offensively. The Spurs have covered the number against the Nets in the last three head-to-head meetings at Frost Bank Center. Iβll lay the double-digit chalk and take San Antonio.
Total Pick:
- Over 227.5 (5 units)
To start the season, the Nets are averaging 120.5 ppg and allowing 133.5, while the Spurs are averaging 122.5 and allowing 104 ppg. Although San Antonioβs defense has been excellent, I expect the Spurs to get into the high 120s on their own, which means if the Nets can just hit the century mark, this game should go over. The way both teams have been trending, I have to take the over on this number.
