Good at Tanking
The Nets lost at Memphis on Sunday, with leading scorer Michael Porter Jr. (rest) out against a Memphis team without Ja Morant (calf) and Zach Edey (ankle), amongst others. The tank is pretty safe in terms of getting another high lottery pick, but Porter Jr. could also be involved in a trade before the deadline in a few weeks.
The good news is that Cam Thomas, who is just 24, is making his way back from a hamstring injury. He's not 100% but since coming back on Dec. 27, has played seven games, averaging a little more than 20 minutes per game and averaging 16.1 points per game. He played 23 minutes on Sunday on the bench against the Grizzlies, scoring just nine points on 4-of-12 shooting. Tyrese Martin and Nic Clowney had 17 points apiece to lead a lineup with very little firepower, with Porter Jr. sitting out. Rookie center Danny World added 11 points and 10 rebounds in 24 minutes as a starter.
On the injury front, MPJ should return after a "rest" day. He's leading the team with 25.9 points per game with 7.4 rebounds on 49% shooting and 39.7% from long range. F Ziaire Williams (illness) missed Sunday's game and the loss to the Clippers on Jan. 9 and is averaging just over nine points per game.

Brooklyn, which has lost six of seven games, is ranked 25th in Adjusted Net Rating on DunksandThrees.com, 26th in Adjusted Offensive Rating and 22nd in Adjusted Defense.
Davis out again for Mavs
So much for that Anthony Davis trade. The 6-10 big man injured his hand in Dallas' 116-114 loss at Utah on January 8. The injury could mean the rest or most of the regular season, considering he might need surgery. That's devastating news for an organization that fired its GM (Nico Harrison) over the controversial deal with the Lakers for Luka Doncic. With Davis out, they lost their leading scorer (20.4ppg), rebounder (11.1rpg) and shotblocker (1.7) for an indefinite amount of time.
That loss likely means that the Mavs will be in trade mode since they are 12th in the West, though 10th-place Memphis is also considering some major trades. The Mavs already have center Dereck Lively II (foot), G Dante Exum (knee), and G Kyrie Irving (ACL) out for the season. Irving might be able to return at some point, though it may not make sense to play him if they are out of the playoff race.
They've now lost six of their last eight gams, and at this point, it becomes Cooper Flagg's team. The 6-8 rookie from Duke struggled in their latest loss against Chicago on Saturday (125-107). Flagg shot just 4-of-13 from the field, while the Mavs were led by Ryan Nemghard, who had 16 points. Flagg is still having a strong rookie campaign with 18.9 points per game, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.2 assists, while shooting 47.7% from the field. His biggest weakness is his three-point shooting (28.5%). Veteran Klay Thompson, who might be another trade candidate, is averaging just 11.2 points, shooting 37.3% from the field (35.8% 3pt) in 22 minutes per game.
Dallas is ranked just above Brooklyn at 23rd in Adjusted Net Rating, 30th in Adjusted Offense and 10th in Adjusted Defense.
Spread Pick and Prediction for Nets vs. Mavs
Nets vs. Mavericks Pick, Odds and Prediction
- Brooklyn +3.5 (4 units)
This is dependent on Michael Porter Jr. playing, who rested for Sunday's game against Memphis. These are two teams going in the same direction, but while Dallas is rated highly on the defensive end, a lot of that has to do with Davis patrolling the paint. The Nets may not have a lot of big names outside of MPJ and Cam Thomas, but they do play hard. Even though they've lost three of four games, they've covered in three of those games. Without Davis, Dallas was crushed by Chicago by 18 points. Without AD, the Mavericks are 4-15 this season.
Over/Under pick for Nets vs. Mavs
- Under 221.5 (4 units)
These teams have very little firepower, especially the Mavs as Klay Thompson is a shadow of his former self and Flagg is more of a slasher without a consistent three-point shot at 19. The Mavs have gone under in five straight games and while they play a fast pace of play, that's never easy with your best rebounder out. Brooklyn is the opposite in terms of pace of play, ranking 27th in the league in Adjusted Tempo. The Nets have gone under in five of their last seven games.
