Brooklyn Drops Four Straight
The Brooklyn Nets are in a rebuilding year, whether the team admits it or not. They held on to five rookies this season, and are saving cap money while trotting out the best lineup they can muster. The Nets are in the bottom of the Eastern Conference, with just one win through their first 12 games. In their last game, Michael Porter Jr. led the way with 24 points in their road loss against Orlando.
Porter came over in a trade from the Nuggets and has been putting up career numbers, but his team has suffered more losses than he is used to. He has been Brooklyn's leading scorer with 23.2 PPG to go with 7.7 RPG and 3.0 APG. Porter is an excellent three-point shooter and is knocking down 3.1 threes per game on 34.7% shooting from deep. Cam Thomas is a scoring guard, but will still be out of the lineup with a left hamstring strain. This leaves Nic Claxton as their next top scorer, the athletic big is getting 15.0 PPG and 6.9 RPG while doing most of his damage around the rim.
Porter and Claxton will be their only double-figure scorers coming into this game. Their next best scorer is Terance Mann, who is getting 9.9 PPG as a defensive stopper on the wing. The Nets are 24th in offensive efficiency and 30th in defensive efficiency according to dunksandthrees.com. Brooklyn plays at a slow pace, ranking 27th in the league in pace of play.
Injury Report for Nets:
- Cam Thomas (hamstring) is out
- Haywood Highsmith (knee) is out for 2-3 weeks.
Wizards Search for First Home Win
The Washington Wizards won the second game of the season, but have not won since, as they now have a 1-11 record. Their only win of the season came over the Mavericks, as Cooper Flagg was playing just his second professional game of his career. The Wizards have lost all five of their home games, and have their best chance to steal a win on their home floor here. In their last game, Alex Sarr had 25 points and 11 rebounds in the loss to the Rockets.
Sarr is in his second season in the league after being drafted second overall in 2024. He is still just 20 years old and is the building block of the future for the Wizards, as he leads the team with 19.1 PPG and 8.6 RPG. Sarr recently dropped 31 on the road against the Celtics and is coming off a 25-point game against Houston. Sarr has scored in double figures in every game this season. CJ McCollum came over from the Pelicans in an offseason trade, and is getting 16.3 PPG with his new team. Kyshawn George is another part of their youth movement. The 21-year-old 6'8 forward is averaging 15.8 PPG and 6.1 RPG.
Tre Johnson is their star rookie. He was drafted 6th overall and has been scoring 11.9 PPG to start his career. Khris Middleton is a veteran presence for Washington, adding 9.4 PPG on the wing. The Wizards rank 29th in offensive efficiency and 29th in defensive efficiency according. They play much faster than the Nets, ranking 2nd in the league in pace of play.
Key Injury Report for Wizards:
- Bilal Coulibaly (leg) is out.
Nets vs. Wizards Picks and Predictions
Spread pick for Nets vs. Wizards
- Wizards -3.5 (4 units)
This is an ugly game, but someone has to win, and someone has to cover, and that team is going to be the Wizards. Brooklyn is in rebuild mode, but does not have a young star to help build positive momentum throughout the year. Cam Thomas is out for this game, taking out the best scorer for Brooklyn, leaving just Michael Porter Jr. to fend for himself. Porter is not a shot creator; he is more likely to be found in the corner waiting for a kick-out pass for a three, which will be harder to find without Thomas. Washington has Sarr, McCollum, and Middleton healthy; this may not be enough for most NBA teams, but it is enough to win against Brooklyn.
Take the Wizards to win and cover.
Over/Under Pick for Nets vs. Wizards
- Under 231.5 (4 units)
There is not enough offense in this game to send the total over 230. Neither team has an elite scorer, and the best scorer in the game will be on the sideline as Cam Thomas is out with an injury. Washington has Sarr, and while he has been playing better as of late, he cannot be expected to put up 25-plus on any given night. Brooklyn has Porter, but his game shrinks when he does not have someone to kick the ball out to him at the three-point line. Brooklyn wants to keep this game close and will slow the game down as they rank just 27th in the league in tempo. This will be a low-scoring game.
