Bucks are fighting to stay relevant without Giannis

Milwaukee (11-17 SU, 12-16 ATS, and 12-16 O/U) lost 111-105 to Toronto on Thursday. The Bucks are paced by Giannis Antetokounmpo, who averages 28.9 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 6.1 dimes per game. They score 113.6 points per game (24th) on 48.9 percent shooting (4th), and hold their opponents to 117.5 points per game (21st) on 47.3 percent shooting (16th).

Milwaukee finished with a 48-34 record last season, winning the NBA Cup and finishing fifth in the Eastern Conference. They were bounced in five games by the eventual EC champs, Indiana, in the first round of the NBA playoffs. The Bucks made a few changes to their roster in an attempt to make a deeper playoff run, trading Khris Middleton to Washington for Kuzma and acquiring Porter Jr. from the Los Angeles Clippers; however, the pieces didn't fit together well enough. That didn't deter management from continuing to retool the team in the offseason, signing Pacers star Myles Turner, waiving Damian Lillard, and letting Brook Lopez walk in free agency.

The addition of Turner turned heads around the league, and the big man gives Milwaukee elite rim protection and long-range shooting. He averaged 2.0 blocks per game last season and stretched the floor, hitting 2.2 three-pointers per game on 39.6 percent shooting. The Bucks also signed Anthony and SG Gary Harris, and re-signed Porter Jr., Gary Trent Jr., Bobby Portis, Taurean Prince, and AJ Green, giving them solid depth around Antetokounmpo and Turner. It's unclear whether this roster gives Giannis a supporting cast capable of competing with the beasts of the East, but the conference is more wide open with several contenders dealing with season-long injuries to star players.

Milwaukee Bucks Injury Report:

  • Antetokounmpo (calf) is out, and F Kyle Kuzma (illness) is questionable.

Timberwolves are coming off a statement win

Minnesota (18-10 SU, 11-17 ATS, and 13-15 O/U) beat OKC 112-107 in its previous game, pulling off the upset as seven-point underdogs. The T-Wolves have won eight of their last ten games.

Minnesota shot 37 percent overall, but worked its way to the foul line a lot (47 attempts) in Friday's win. The T-Wolves trailed by as many as 12 points, but won the rebounding battle, collecting 18 offensive rebounds.

Anthony Edwards leads the Timberwolves in scoring, averaging 28.6 points per game on 49.4 percent shooting. He also averages 4.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. A few other Minnesota players to watch against the Bucks are F Julius Randle (23.0 PPG, 7.2 RPG, and 5.7 APG), F Jaden McDaniels (15.7 PPG and 4.8 RPG), G Donte DiVincenzo (13.9 PPG and 4.4 RPG), and C Rudy Gobert (11.6 PPG and 10.5 RPG).

The Timberwolves score 119.2 points per game (8th) on 47.9 percent shooting (10th), including 37.5 percent from three-point range (4th). The Minnesota defense surrenders 114.3 points per game (10th) on 45.9 percent shooting (5th), including 35.1 percent from beyond the arc (9th). They are 9th in NET rating, including 8th in offensive rating and 8th in defensive rating, per Dunks and Threes.

Minnesota Timberwolves Injury Report:

  • G Jaylen Clark (illness) is questionable.

Bucks vs. Timberwolves Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Bucks vs. Timberwolves

  • T-Wolves cover (5 Units)

Minnesota is on a hot streak that was capped off with an upset win over the Thunder. Milwaukee, meanwhile, has dropped four of its last five and seven of ten overall. Ant won't let the T-Wolves lose their edge at home on Sunday, building off his special showing against OKC. He's one of the faces of the league and is eager to prove it. The Bucks are soft defensively inside (20th in opponent rim%) and rank 22nd in opponent two-point percentage this season. Minnesota will get its fair share of buckets inside the arc, and it's a very tough team to defend from long range (4th).

Milwaukee is 4-8 ATS on the road and 1-5 ATS vs. Western Conference teams this season. Without Giannis, it's a team without an alpha capable of competing with Ant-Man and his co-stars. Bet on Minnesota to cover on Sunday!

Over/Under Pick for Bucks vs. Timberwolves

  • Under (4 Units)

The under is 8-2 in the Bucks' last ten games, including 5-1 in their previous six. It has also cashed in three straight games between the Bucks and Timberwolves. That's how I recommend wagering on the total in tomorrow's game, as the visitors will be prepared to slow down the tempo (25th in pace) in an effort to keep the score close without Antetokounmpo and potentially Kuzma. Minnesota is also slightly slower than average-paced, which should result in a low-possession game.
