Bulls shook up their roster at the trade deadline
Chicago (24-30 SU, 24-29-1 ATS, and 27-27 O/U) lost 123-115 to Brooklyn on Monday, its fifth consecutive defeat. The Bulls, who were three-point betting favorites, trailed by as many as 15 points and committed 18 turnovers. They shot 44 percent overall, including 28 percent from deep, compared to 51 percent/48 percent for Brooklyn. The Nets also outrebounded them 47-39 and outscored them 66-50 in the paint.

Chicago is 2-8 both straight-up and against the spread in its last ten games. The over went 6-4. The Bulls rank 24th in the NBA in NET rating, including 22nd in offensive efficiency rating and 25th in defensive efficiency rating, per Dunks and Threes. Josh Giddey paces the team in scoring, averaging 18.6 points with 8.8 assists and 8.6 rebounds per game. A few Bulls to watch on Wednesday against the Celtics are Matas Buzelis (15.2 PPG and 5.3 RPG), Anfernee Simons (14.5 PPG), and Collin Sexton (14.4 PPG and 3.7 APG).
The Bulls made several moves at last week's trade deadline, shipping out Coby White, Nikola Vucevic, Kevin Huerter, and Ayo Dosunmu. All four players were key contributors, but management ultimately decided to ship them out because the team was "not satisfied with being in the middle" of the pack, according to vice president Arturas Karnisovas. In return, Chicago acquired several impactful guards, Jaden Ivey, Rob Dillingham, Sexton, and Simons, as well as Leonard Miller, Nick Richards, Guerschon Yabusele, and nine second-round picks. While not deemed a rebuild, the trades give them more financial flexibility, youth, and draft capital. The Bulls are currently in 11th place in the East, which would put them in the NBA Play-In Tournament for the fourth consecutive season.
Chicago Bulls Injury Report:
- Giddey (hamstring), Tre Jones (hamstring), and Jalen Smith (calf) are doubtful to play against Boston.
Boston had a dud performance in its last game
Boston (34-19 SU, 29-23-1 ATS, and 19-34 O/U) lost 111-89 to New York on Sunday, failing to cover as 3.5-point betting favorites. The Celtics, who had won their previous five games, shot an uncharacteristic 37 percent from the field, including 7-for-41 (17%) from three-point range. The Knicks jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, hitting 14 threes en route to a dominant road dub.
Boston is 7-3 straight-up and 4-6 against the spread in its last ten games. The under was 9-1. The Celtics rank 3rd in the league in NET rating, including 2nd in offensive efficiency rating and 13th in defensive efficiency rating, per Dunks and Threes. Jaylen Brown leads the squad in scoring, averaging 29.4 points with 6.9 rebounds and 4.7 dimes per game. A few Celtics stars to watch on Wednesday against the Bulls are Derrick White (17.4 PPG and 5.5 APG), Payton Pritchard (17.1 PPG and 5.3 APG), and Vucevic (16.6 PPG and 9.0 RPG).
The C's are tied with the Knicks for second place in the NBA's Eastern Conference, an unexpected result for a team playing without star forward Jayson Tatum and two of the other five starters from last season's 61-win squad. Boston has leaned on Brown to lead the show, but he's hardly been the only difference-maker, as both White and Pritchard have increased their scoring averages. The club also made a splash at the trade deadline, sending Simons to Chicago for the veteran center Vucevic to bolster their frontcourt rotation. With Al Horford and Kristaps PorziΕΔ£is gone, the addition gives Boston more size and physicality for the second half of the regular season and the playoffs.
Boston Celtics Injury Report:
- Sam Hauser (back) and Neemias Queta (ankle) are probable to play against Chicago.
Bulls vs. Celtics Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Bulls vs. Celtics
- Boston -13.5 (4 Units)
Chicago acquired a bevy of guards at the deadline, creating a perplexing rotation. While they acquired some talented pieces, these guys are all ball-dominant, high-usage guards. With several players attempting to create their own offense, Chicago's offense will be stagnant at times, leading to chaotic, inconsistent scoring action. That doesn't sound like an ideal offensive strategy against a Celtics team that's eager to bounce back after an uncharacteristically poor shooting performance on Sunday. The C's won't shoot 17 percent from three again on Wednesday against the league's worst three-point defense β and possibly not that low again the rest of the year. They'll also attack the Bulls at the basket (they rank 2nd in rim shooting percentage), just as the Nets did (scoring 66 points) on Monday.
Bet on the Celtics to cover the number on Wednesday!
Over/Under Pick for Bulls vs. Celtics
- Under 226.5 (5 Units)
Betting Trend: The under is 9-1 in Boston's last ten games.
The Celtics scored just 89 points last game and 98 in their previous game, both of which were at home. They are the slowest-tempo team in the NBA, and while they should be more efficient offensively tomorrow than on Sunday, they aren't likely to be challenged enough by Chicago to push them into a high-scoring affair. In short, I believe they'll focus primarily on locking down the Bulls on defense to win Wednesday's game. The C's rank 3rd in opponent effective field goal percentage, as they're top ten in rim defense (8th) and mid-range defense (2nd). They allow the fewest rim field goal attempts and the third-fewest mid-range shots, forcing their opponents to let it fly from long range. After missing 26 threes on Monday, I don't envision Chicago making the most of those shot opportunities on Wednesday. Bet on the under!
