Bulls have cooled off after a hot start to the season
Chicago is 3-7 straight-up and 3-6-1 against the spread in its last ten games. The over was 7-3. They've won three of four games, but covered just one of those games. In their last games, they edged the lowly Wizards 121-120 at home on Saturday as veteran Nikola Vucevic had a strong game with 28 points and 12 boards on 12-of-20 shooting.
Chicago ranks 21st in NET rating, including 20th in offensive efficiency rating and 23rd in defensive efficiency rating, per Dunks and Threes. Josh Giddey paces the team in scoring, averaging 20.7 points with 9.9 rebounds and 9.6 assists per game. A few other Bulls to watch on Monday against the Pelicans are Coby White (26.0 PPG and 7.5 APG in two games), Nikola Vučević (15.9 PPG and 9.5 RPG), and Ayo Dosunmu (16.2 PPG).
Chicago is one of the youngest teams in the NBA, as its core group is all 25 years or younger. The up-and-comers will look to improve on last season's 39-43 regular-season record and Play-In Tournament berth, building off their strong finish down the stretch (won 15 of their final 20 games). After trading away veteran guard Zach LaVine mid-season, the Bulls embraced White, Giddey, and Matas Buzelis as their new headliners. They aren't the only significant pieces to the puzzle, though. Vučević (18.5 PPG), Kevin Huerter (13.2 PPG), and Dosunmu (12.3 PPG) are back, along with Tre Jones, who averaged 11.5 PPG and 4.9 APG after he was acquired from San Antonio last season. With the 12th overall pick, Noa Essengue joining that group, Chicago has a quality roster capable of making noise in the Eastern Conference.
Chicago Bulls Key Injury Report:
- Matas Buzelis (ankle), Tre Jones (ankle), Isaac Okoro (lumbar), Patrick Williams (wrist), and Kevin Huerter (illness) are day-to-day.
Pelicans are off to a disappointing start
New Orleans is 2-8 straight-up (6-3-1 ATS) in its previous ten games. The over/under was split 5-5.
The Pels were 21-61 last season, finishing 14th in the West and missing the NBA Playoffs. Injuries limited them, as Zion Williamson (52 games), Dejounte Murray (51), Trey Murphy III (29), and CJ McCollum (26) all missed extended time. New Orleans ranked in the bottom five of the league in both offensive and defensive rating. In the midst of a forgettable season, the front office traded Brandon Ingram and sent McCollum to Washington for Jordan Poole over the summer.
New Orleans has a mix of veterans and young talent on its roster. Three-time champion Kevon Looney was signed in free agency to bring stability to the frontcourt rotation, and forward Saddiq Bey was acquired via trade. The Pelicans also made a couple of nice moves on draft night, selecting Oklahoma guard Jeremiah Fears and Maryland forward Derik Queen with the 7th and 13th picks. Fears is a slashing combo guard with upside (13.8 PPG and 3.2 APG), and he has been thrown into the fire with Dejounte Murray rehabbing from a torn Achilles suffered in January. All that said, Zion Williamson is still the centerpiece of New Orleans' team. He's still only 25 and has proven to be an elite rebounder and post scorer when healthy. With fellow 25-year-old forward Trey Murphy III (21.2 PPG last season) at his side, the Pelicans have a frontcourt worth building around.
New Orleans Pelicans Key Injury Report:
- Zion Williamson (hamstring), Jordan Poole (knee), and Herb Jones (back) are day-to-day. Williamson and Poole sat out Saturday's game vs Atlanta.
Bulls vs. Pelicans Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Bulls vs. Pelicans
- Chicago -4.5 (4 Units)
Both squads are dealing with several significant injuries, but Chicago's group is more likely to be healthier, especially with its top scoring options, Giddey and White, available to play. The Bulls haven't played their best basketball recently, but the Pelicans have been awful all season. I don't trust them to cover if Williamson sits out again, as Chicago will attack the paint more, boosting its offensive projection. The Bulls already rank third in three-point percentage. They also take great care of the basketball, ranking in the top ten in turnover percentage this season.
Giddey and White will set the table for their teammates, putting them in good spots to score against a weak Pelicans defense. New Orleans doesn't have enough reliable offensive firepower to keep pace, either. Bet on the Bulls to cover.
Over/Under Pick for Bulls vs. Pelicans
- Under 242.5 (4 Units)
I like the under in Monday's Bulls vs. Pelicans game. Both teams have lengthy injury reports, and neither has been playing good basketball lately. With that said, New Orleans is also slow-tempo, ranking in the bottom ten in pace. They'll slow down the tempo at home to keep the score close as they can, reducing the Bulls' possessions. While I doubt it will be enough to help them cover the spread, it should prevent the game from getting too high-scoring.
These teams rank 20th and 27th in offensive efficiency rating. Bet on the under!
