Cavaliers have faced a tough schedule
Cleveland (3-1 SU, 1-3 ATS, and 2-2 O/U) defeated Detroit 116-95 on Monday night. The Cavaliers held the Pistons to 37 percent shooting and forced 26 turnovers. They scored 54 points in the paint and knocked down 27 free throws, as Donovan Mitchell paced the team with 35 points on 13-for-18 shooting. Jarrett Allen added 20 points and seven rebounds, while Evan Mobley contributed 15 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists.
The Cavs dropped their season opener to New York, but responded nicely with wins over Brooklyn, Milwaukee, and Detroit. Their only spread cover came in Monday's dominant win, however. Cleveland currently ranks in the top five of the league in both offensive and defensive rating, including third in mid-range shooting percentage and fourth in mid-range defense. They have also bullied their way to the foul line a lot (sixth in FT rate) and forced their opponents into the second-highest turnover rate in the NBA.

Cleveland dominated the regular season in 2024-25, winning 64 games, two shy of the franchise record. They scored the eighth-most points in NBA history (9,999) and boasted the league's Defensive Player of the Year, Mobley. While unstoppable at times during the regular season, the Cavaliers were battle-weary in the playoffs, losing 4-1 in the conference semifinals. The team didn't tinker much with its roster in the offseason, but traded Isaac Okoro to Chicago for PG Lonzo Ball and signed Larry Nance Jr. for veteran frontcourt depth. If they can stay healthy, there's no denying the Cavs will be among the top contenders this season.
Cleveland Cavs Basketball Injury Report:Β PG Lonzo Ball (rest) sat out Monday's game, and SG Sam Merrill (hip) exited the game early. G Darius Garland (toe) and G Max Strus (foot) are out.
Boston is a new-look team this season
Boston (1-3 SU, 1-3 ATS, and 2-2 O/U) beat New Orleans 122-90 as 4.5-point spread favorites on Monday. The Celtics held the Pelicans to 33 percent shooting, including 25 percent from beyond the arc. They led by as many as 32 points and never trailed by more than one, dominating the boards with a 54-35 rebounding edge. New Orleans limped to the finish line, scoring just 12 points in the fourth quarter.
Monday's win snapped a three-game losing streak for Boston, which had lost by one point to Philadelphia on opening night and had been less competitive in defeats to New York and Detroit. The Celtics have been solid offensively, but rank outside the top ten in defensive rating. Their opponents have also been active on the boards, collecting the third-most offensive rebounds. Boston has also struggled to get to the charity stripe, ranking 29th in free-throw rate.
The 2025-26 season will be a transition for the C's, as management opted to revamp the team's roster in the offseason. Big-name, big-contract veterans Jrue Holiday, Al Horford, and Kristaps PorziΕΔ£is are gone, with Anfernee Simons (19.3 PPG last season) coming in via trade with Portland. Only two of the five starters from last season's 61-win squad will take the court, as Jayson Tatum is out for the season after tearing his Achilles tendon in the playoffs. Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and Payton Pritchard are still suiting up in Celtics green, but the team isn't an NBA Finals favorite.
Boston Celtics Basketball Injury Report:Β No new injuries to report for Wednesday's game against the Cavaliers.
Cavaliers vs. Celtics Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Cavaliers vs. Celtics
- Celtics +4.5 (5 Units)
The home team is off to a slow start from three-point range, but the Cavs haven't defended the three-point shot well (24th in 3PT defense), which should help spur the Celtics to a cover, as they have been efficient inside the arc (6th in 2PT%). They also have momentum after dominating the Pelicans in their previous game. Cleveland has struggled with turnovers and hasn't generated enough second-chance scoring opportunities, ranking 23rd in offensive rebounding percentage, to make up for those lost possessions. Considering Boston takes care of the basketball (4th in TO%) and plays at a slow pace, that could be an x-factor.
Boston will be competitive on Wednesday β bet on the Celtics to cover the 4.5-point spread.
Over/Under Pick for Cavaliers vs. Celtics
- Under 233 (5 Units)
The Celtics (28th in pace) will slow down the visitors, taking their time on offense and forcing the Cavs into long possessions on the other end of the court. Boston averages the longest defensive possession length (15.4 seconds) in the NBA this season. Given that Cleveland has been cavalier with the basketball (5th-highest turnover percentage) and hasn't secured enough offensive rebounds, the visitors may not have enough possessions to score 115-plus points.
These teams will play a competitive, lower-scoring game. Bet on the under at 233 points.
