Can the Cavaliers respond after their upset loss to Phoenix?
Cleveland (29-21 SU, 19-31 ATS, and 23-27 O/U) lost 126-113 to Phoenix on Friday, failing to cover as two-point spread favorites. The Cavaliers, who had won their previous five games, shot just 31 percent from beyond the arc and committed 22 turnovers that led to 36 Suns points. Phoenix hit 53 percent of their field goals, including 23 three-pointers.
The Cavs are paced by guard Donovan Mitchell, who is having another excellent season. He's averaging 29.1 points on 48.4 percent shooting with 5.8 dimes and 4.7 rebounds per game. Cleveland averages 119.1 points per game (4th) with a 47.2 FG percentage (13th) and a 35.6 percent mark (16th) from three-point range. Defensively, the Cavaliers allow 116.3 points per game (19th) on 46.4 percent shooting (12th), including 37.7 percent from deep (28th).
Cleveland dominated the regular season in 2024-25, winning 64 games, two shy of the franchise record. They scored the eighth-most points in NBA history (9,999) and boasted the league's Defensive Player of the Year, Evan Mobley. While unstoppable at times during the regular season, the Cavaliers were battle-weary in the playoffs, losing 4-1 in the conference semifinals. The team didn't tinker much with its roster in the offseason, but traded Isaac Okoro to Chicago for PG Lonzo Ball and signed Larry Nance Jr. for veteran frontcourt depth.
Cleveland Cavs Injury Report:
- PG Darius Garland (foot) and PF Evan Mobley (calf) are out.
Trail Blazers are a solid team to back ATS at Moda Center
Portland (23-26 SU, 27-22 ATS, and 23-26 O/U) lost 127-97 to New York in its last game, failing to cover the seven-point spread. The Trail Blazers never led and trailed by as many as 33 points, as they shot 43 percent (30 percent from deep) and committed 20 costly turnovers. The Knicks dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Blazers 52-37 with 16 offensive rebounds. They also knocked down 19 threes and scored 50 points in the paint.
The Trail Blazers, who are 4-6 in their last ten games (5-5 ATS), are led by F Deni Avdija, who averages 25.5 points with 7.2 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game. Portland scores 115.1 points per game (19th) with a 44.7 FG percentage (28th), including 33.6 percent from three-point distance (29th). The Blazers' opponents average 117.6 points per game (22nd) on 47.1 percent shooting (19th), including 35.2 percent from beyond the arc (11th).
Portland went 36-46 last season, finishing 12th in the Western Conference and missing the NBA Playoffs. Still, there was a lot for fans to feel cheerful about. The Blazers turned it on after the All-Star break with a 23-18 record, missing the Play-In Tournament by just three games. The 15-win improvement from the previous season was fueled by the breakouts of Shaedon Sharpe and Avdija, as well as stout defensive play. The Trail Blazers solidified their roster by adding veteran players during the offseason. PG Jrue Holiday (14.3 PPG and 6.7 APG this season) was acquired via a trade with Boston, bringing a championship pedigree, and former Blazers star Damian Lillard was signed, as well. Deandre Ayton's exit also opened up the door for second-year center Donovan Clingan (11.2 PPG and 11.2 RPG) to make a bigger impact.
Portland Trail Blazers Injury Report:
- SF Kris Murray (back) and SG Matisse Thybulle (knee) are out. PG Scoot Henderson (hamstring) is also day-to-day.
Cavaliers vs. Trail Blazers Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Cavaliers vs. Trail Blazers
- Blazers cover (4 Units)
Betting Trends: Portland is 15-9 ATS at home this season, while Cleveland is 10-12 ATS on the road.
The Blazers will bounce back from a string of poor road performances with a much better effort at home, attacking a weak Cavs perimeter defense. Cleveland isn't as stout defensively around the rim without Mobley (2.0 BPG), either. Portland has plenty of scoring options, and players like Caleb Love are more comfortable at Moda Center than they are on the road, which should help the Trail Blazers keep the score close. The Cavs are coming off a double-digit upset loss in the first game of their road trip and can't be counted on to cover the spread a couple of days later.
Over/Under Pick for Cavaliers vs. Trail Blazers
- Over (5 Units)
This East-West matchup pits two of the league's highest-tempo teams, as Portland ranks seventh in pace and Cleveland ranks eighth. The Cavaliers are especially fast when they have the basketball, averaging the third-shortest offensive possession length in the NBA. They will attack Portland inside the arc, where the home team ranks 20th in rim defense and 23rd in mid-range defense. The Blazers also rank dead last in turnover percentage, which the Cavs will use to their advantage to score fast-break buckets. On the other end of the court, the home team will attack the visitors from three-point range, where they allow plenty of good looks at the basket. Portland is also third in offensive rebounding percentage and fifth in free-throw attempt rate, so the Blazers should generate second-chance shots around the rim and force their way to the foul line often, as well.
