Charlotte Opens With A Win
The Charlotte Hornets looked strong in their opening game of the season, but they also played a team that might be the worst in the league this year. The Hornets will find out what they are really made of in this game against the 76ers, as Charlotte has not made the Playoffs since the 2016 season. There is plenty of young talent in Charlotte, but the team needs to gel to hope to find a way to break their postseason drought this year. In their win over Brooklyn, Brandon Miller led the way with 25 points and seven assists in the win.
Miller is now in year three, and if he is going to blossom into an All-Star, this has to be the year. Miller has all the tools to become a star in the league, but he does not shoot as many free throws as a player with his size and athleticism should. On top of that, Miller played 31 minutes against Brooklyn in the opener, and did not grab a single rebound as a 6'7 athlete. LaMelo Ball is the current face of the franchise. He had 20 points and eight assists as a 6'7 point guard. The Hornets had a balanced attack, as nine players scored in double figures, including all five starters.
Kon Knueppel is their rookie out of Duke, who had 11 points and five boards in his NBA debut. Ryan Kalkbrenner is also a rookie. The 7'1 big man out of Creighton opened his NBA career with an even more impressive game, finishing with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Miles Bridges is still athletic enough to finish above the rim and is a physical presence on each side of the floor.

76ers Show Off Their Rookie
The Philadelphia 76ers did not have the top pick in the NBA draft and missed out on the Cooper Flagg sweepstakes. Despite this, their rookie made all the Philly fans forget about that, as VJ Edgecomb broke the franchise record for points in a debut with 34 points in his impressive night. Edgecomb had five threes and multiple dunks to start his career as a 20-year-old 6'4 guard. Edgecomb had the full trust of the coaching staff, playing 42 minutes in the win.
Even with Edgecomb's big night, he was not the leading scorer in the game, as Tyrese Maxey dropped 40 to open the year. Maxey had to become the top dog in Philly last season as Embiid and Paul George battled injuries and did not live up to expectations. Maxey finished the game with six assists and hit seven threes in the win. Dominick Barlow had a strong showing in his first game with Philly, playing only ten minutes per game last season with Atlanta, but played 34 here and finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
The most surprising outcome of the game is that Joel Embiid only had four points over 20 minutes, while shooting 1-9 from the field. The big man did not seem to be moving well, leaving some to wonder about the strength of his knees. Kelly Oubre Jr. and Quentin Grimes each finished with ten points as perimeter scorers.
Injury Report:
Out: Jared McCain, Paul George
Questionable: Justin Edwards

Spread pick and prediction for Hornets vs. 76ers
- Hornets to cover (4 units)
The 76ers got hot from deep in their opener, but that is going to be a difficult game plan to repeat, as they cannot count on Maxey hitting seven threes and Edgecomb hitting another five every night. If you were able to catch the first game of the season for Philly, you would have seen Embiid looking like a shell of himself. The big man was barely jumping off the floor, and lacked any explosiveness as he struggled to score and shot just 1-9 from the field. The Hornets are starting a rookie at center, but Kalkbrenner is still 7'1, and 256 pounds, he will be a problem for Embiid. The combo of LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller are set to explode onto the scene, they will look strong here and cover the spread.
Take the Hornets to cover.
Over/Under Pick for Hornets vs. 76ers
- Over (4 units)
The easiest way to get stops in the NBA is to put pressure on the ball, the rely on a rim protector to eat up space in the paint. It looks as if neither team will have a strong rim protector in this game, which will open up lanes for all the athletes to attack the bucket. Embiid looked slow in game one of the season, and will not be rotating quickly to stop the Ball and Miller drives. Kalkbrenner is the big man for Charlotte, but he is not quick off his feet, and is more of an offensive threat than a defensive one. This will leave driving lanes for both teams, and Maxey just combined to score 74 points with Edgecomb in their first game together. Each team had the day off on Friday, expect a big number here.
Take the over.
