Bulls Surprise in Opener

Despite playing without high-scoring guard Coby White, the Chicago Bulls opened the 2025-26 season with a 115-111 upset win over the Detroit Pistons in Chicago on Wednesday night. The Bulls came out blazing hot and built a 23-point lead in the first half. The Pistons responded and tied the game late in the fourth quarter. After some back-and-forth exchanges, the Bulls were able to pull away for the four-point win. Nikola Vucevic led the way with 28 points and 14 rebounds. Matus Buzelis scored 21 points, and Josh Giddey finished with 19 points and 11 assists. The Bulls held a 50-40 edge in rebounding but were sloppy, turning the ball over 18 times.

The Bulls hope to return to the playoffs this season, focusing on a fast-paced attack similar to the one employed by their division rivals, the Indiana Pacers. They had to be pleased with the performance of 2024 first-round pick Buzelis in the opener. Buzelis’ 21 points were much needed with the absence of White for at least the first several games. The pace of play will continue to be a key factor for a team that finished second in the NBA in pace of play last season. Giddey had a double-double in the opener, but the Bulls want even more from him this season, especially with this style of play. Watch for the former Thunder guard to threaten a triple-double on many nights.

Key Injuries: G Coby White and F Zach Collins are out.

Magic Get Off on the Right Foot

The Orlando Magic got out the right way on Wednesday night, upending the Miami Heat 125-121 in a game that may have been closer than they would have liked. The Magic know about fast starts, jumping out to the top of the division last season before injuries started popping up. In the opener, the Magic got 24 points each from stars Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero. They also got a big night from newcomer Desmond Bane, who signed a five-year deal with the Magic this offseason. Bane poured in 23 points to support the play of Banchero and Wagner, something management hopes will continue all season. The big surprise in the game was the starting nod for point guard Jalen Suggs. Suggs, recovering from a leg injury that sidelined him from January on last season, finished 6-of-7 shooting for 14 points.

Bane did his part in his first game with the Magic. He finished third on the team in scoring and, more importantly, gave the team an outside presence that they sorely lacked last season. Bane connected on 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, part of the 12 3-point field goals the Magic hit on the night. Tyus Jones, another free-agent pickup, had a disappointing night backing up Suggs. He missed all seven shots he took and finished the game a woeful -17. He’ll need to be better, especially early on, with Suggs’ minutes closely monitored. Overall, the Magic shot 46 percent from the field in the opener and finished 12-of-30 from long range. They committed 15 turnovers and were outrebounded 47-46.

Banchero struggled on Friday night, scoring just 11 points on 4 of 15 shooting as the Magic fell to Southeast Division rival Atlanta. The Magic shot just 28.1% from beyond the arc and 24 of 37 from the free throw line, which turned out to be the difference in a four-point loss.

Key Injuries: none.

Point Spread Pick for Bulls vs. Magic

  • Magic to cover (4 units)

The Bulls won the season series last season 2-1, including a win in Orlando. This Magic team, however, is better suited to face the high-flying Bulls. Keep an eye on Suggs for this game; doubtful to be playing back-to-backs this early in his recovery from left knee surgery. In this case, however, Jones may be the perfect point guard to see a heavy dose of minutes. While he struggled in the opener, he’ll have a chance to play fast against the speedy Bulls. The Bulls also do not have the answers for the Magic’s wings, particularly Banchero, on the defensive end. It is too early to be worried about fatigue in the second end of back-to-backs, so I’m leaning on the Magic to control this game early and pull away from a Bulls team that is lacking a major scorer in White.

Take Orlando minus the points.

Over/Under Pick for Bulls vs. Magic

  • Over (4 units)

The Magic showed in their opener that scoring shouldn’t be an issue this season. They shot the ball reasonably well from long range, and Banchero and Wagner proved to be nightmare matchups for the Heat’s wings. That will be even more true against a Bulls team not known for its defensive prowess. Expect a much better performance from Jones, which will only enhance the Magic’s scoring output. The Bulls scored 115 in the opener, and will top that number here.

Take the over.
