Cleveland Has a New Look
The Cleveland Cavaliers have a new look roster as they are hoping to get over the hump in the Eastern Conference and compete for a title. Giannis Antetokounmpo was not traded from Milwaukee, meaning Cleveland's deal to acquire James Harden was the biggest trade at the deadline. The Cavaliers had to give up Darius Garland and a second round pick, but are in win now mode as they wait for the debut of their new star guard.
It is unclear if Harden will play his first game here against Sacramento, as he is listed as questionable on their injury report. Luckily for Cleveland they still have plenty of talent, including Donovan Mitchell who has been averaging over 20 points per game his entire career. Mitchell is averaging 28.8 PPG and 5.9 APG while leading the team in both categories. Mitchell is also their top outside shooter with 3.7 made threes per game. Jaylon Tyson has improved his game this year, and is now a reliable wing player getting 14.0 PPG. Jarrett Allen is their big man on the inside scoring 13.9 PPG and grabbing 8.1 RPG.
Evan Mobley will also miss this game as he is out with a calf injury. Cleveland is currently ranked 2nd in offensive efficiency and 5th in defensive efficiency according to dunksandthrees.com. The Cavaliers play at a fast pace, ranking 8th in possessions per game, but are likely to slow down more once Harden gets in the lineup.
Kings on Eleven Game Skid
The Sacramento Kings have lost their last 11 games coming into this Saturday night matchup with Cleveland, and made some moves at the trade deadline they hope will be helpful. The Kings got Deandre Hunter from this Cleveland team, he will provide the team with a young wing who can hit from the outside and defend well on the perimeter. The Kings dealt away Dennis Schroeder and Keon Ellis in the transaction.
Ellis was a highly sought after piece, but the Kings will add more size with Hunter on the perimeter. Hunter suffered an injury to his eye in his last game, and will be a game time decision here to see if he can play. Their top scorer is Zach Lavine at 19.2 PPG, the high riser has always been able to score the ball well, but has not contributed much to winning teams in his career. Lavine is their top shooter with 2.5 made threes per game, as DeMar DeRozan does most of his work in the mid-range. DeRozan is scoring 19.0 PPG, and Sacramento recently said they will not be buying out his contract, as he will remain with the team for at least the remainder of the season.
Domantas Sabonis is questionable for this game with a back issue, he has only played in 19 games this season. The team hopes 7'1 Maxime Raynaud can continue to improve, as the 22-year old is getting 9.6 PPG and 6.4 RPG. Sacramento is ranked 27th in offensive efficiency and 28th in defensive efficiency. The Kings play slower than the Cavs, ranking 18th in the league in possessions per game.
Injury Report for Cavaliers vs. Kings:
Cavaliers:
- Out: Evan Mobley, Max Strus
- Questionable: James Harden, Dean Wade
Kings:
- Out: Keegan Murray
- Questionable: Domantas Sabonis, Deandre Hunter
Cavaliers vs. Kings Picks and Predictions
Spread pick for Cavaliers vs. Kings
- Kings +12.5 (5 units)
Cleveland is the better team here, but this is far too many points to give the Kings at home in this situation. Cleveland is unsure if Harden will play, and even if he does, they do not know what it will look like trying to merge the ball-dominant Harden in with the high scoring Mitchell. It could be clunky early on as they figure out how to share the ball. Meanwhile, Sacramento still has Lavine, DeRozan and Westbrook all on the floor, and the veteran guards will be able to keep this game close enough to cover this huge number. The Cavs are stuck on a West Coast road trip, and won't have Evan Mobley available either. Take the points.
Take the Kings with the points.
Over/Under Pick for Cavaliers vs. Kings
- Over 234.5 (4 units)
This could end up being a sloppy game. Cleveland has to figure out how to play with Harden infused into their lineup, the offense might be the easy part, but the defense could be a challenge. Harden is not known as an elite defender, so the defense could take a step back for Cleveland. Sacramento is already not a strong defensive team, they are only 28th in defensive efficiency, and are going up against a Cleveland team that is well coached and 2nd in the league in offensive efficiency. Sacramento has gone over in each of their last three games, and will hit the over again here.
Take the over.
