Los Angeles is a tough team for bettors to trust
Los Angeles (6-16 SU, 6-16 ATS, and 12-10 O/U) beat Atlanta 115-92 on Wednesday, snapping a five-game losing streak. The Clippers led by as many as 25 and never trailed by more than two, shooting 49 percent from the floor. They also won the rebounding battle 54-38 and outscored the Hawks 52-40 in the paint.
James Harden is LA's top scoring option. The Arizona State product is averaging 26.9 points, with 8.4 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game. A few other Clippers to watch against the Grizzlies are G Kawhi Leonard (25.9 PPG and 5.5 RPG), C Ivica Zubac (16.2 PPG and 11.8 RPG), and F John Collins (12.0 PPG and 5.1 RPG). Los Angeles scores 112.5 points per game (26th) on 47.0 percent shooting (16th), while its opponents average 117.6 points (19th) on 47.5 percent shooting (21st).
The Clippers went 50-32 last season, finishing 5th in the West. They went on an 18-3 run before the playoffs, but couldn't sustain their momentum, losing in the first round. Beal was among the team's biggest offseason additions, but the 32-year-old will be out for the remainder of the season after undergoing hip surgery earlier this week. LA also traded for Collins and signed G Chris Paul and C Brook Lopez to bolster their depth around Leonard and Harden, but recently let go of CP3. The result is a team loaded with veterans, but will they be on the court enough to make the Clippers a serious contender?
Los Angeles Clippers Basketball Injury Report:
- G Bogdan Bogdanovic (9.2 PPG) won't play on Friday against the Grizzlies (hip).
- G Jordan Miller (8.5 PPG) is questionable (back).
Grizzlies are coming off a win
Memphis (9-13 SU, 9-13 ATS, and 8-14 O/U) lost 126-119 to San Antonio on Tuesday, snapping a three-game winning streak. The Grizz shot 50 percent from the field and won the rebounding battle 50-40, but committed eight more turnovers than the Spurs. San Antonio was 18-for-39 (46%) from three-point range, hitting nine more treys than Memphis.
PG Ja Morant leads the team in scoring at 17.9 points per game, but won't suit up on Friday, leaving the lead scoring duties to Jackson Jr. (17.8 PPG). Six other Memphis players score in double figures, as well. The Grizzlies average 113.7 points (23rd) on 44.5 percent shooting (27th), while their opponents average 117.0 points (18th) on 47.5 percent shooting (20th).
The Grizzlies were 48-34 last season, finishing eighth in the NBA's Western Conference. They ranked second in the league in scoring (121.7 PPG), just 0.2 points off the lead. Unfortunately for fans, Memphis lost its momentum down the stretch, dropping 10 of its final 16 games. Memphis lost Desmond Bane to Orlando in free agency, but made several intriguing moves that should boost the team's depth. Resigning the Michigan State product Jackson Jr. was the team's top priority after Bane's departure, and the additions of two-time champion Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and three-point threat Ty Jerome bring stability to the backcourt. The Grizzlies also traded for forward Cedric Coward, the 11th overall pick in the draft, who showed off a fluid three-point stroke, high motor, and rebounding prowess in college.
Memphis Grizzlies Basketball Injury Report:
- PG Ja Morant is out for Friday's game against the Clippers (calf strain).
Clippers vs. Grizzlies Pick and Preview
Moneyline Pick for Clippers vs. Grizzlies
- Memphis ML (4 Units)
The Clippers have struggled to build momentum after their wins this season, as they're just 1-4 straight-up after a victory. They're also 1-4 SU with a rest disadvantage, 4-9 SU against Western Conference opponents, and 1-2 SU as road favorites. I don't trust their defense (25th in defensive rating) with less rest than their opponent, especially on the road with a veteran roster. The Grizzlies have been playing without Morant for three weeks and have plenty of other scoring options, with seven other players averaging double-digit points. They should have plenty of success from three-point range against Los Angeles' weak perimeter defense (29th in 3PT defense), as they did in the first matchup (17-for-40). On defense, they will do a fine job limiting LA's second-chance buckets (2nd in opponent offensive rebounding percentage) and trips to the charity stripe (2nd in opponent FT attempt rate).
Over/Under Pick for Clippers vs. Grizzlies
- Under 225 (5 Units)
Betting Trends: The under is 4-0 when Memphis has a rest advantage and 9-3 following a Grizzlies loss this season.
These teams combined for 219 points on November 28, falling short of the 225-point total. I expect a similar outcome on Friday night in Memphis, as the Clippers rank 28th in pace, and average the second-longest offensive possession length in the NBA. That's also how the Grizzlies prefer to play, as they average the seventh-longest defensive possession length. With neither team possessing a significant advantage, I expect this matchup to be competitive and low-scoring. Memphis won't give up many second-chance buckets or free throws, and while Los Angeles is weak defensively on the perimeter, it ranks 8th in two-point defense.
