The Clippers continue to struggle
The LA Clippers (5-12; 5-12 ATS; 10-7 O/U) have only won two of their previous 12 games overall. Last Saturday, they beat the Charlotte Hornets 131-116 as slight road underdogs to snap a three-game skid. James Harden went off for a franchise-record 55 points, making 10 of his 16 shots from deep, while Ivica Zubac had 18 points, nine rebounds, and six assists.
The next day, the Clippers suffered a 120-105 defeat at the Cleveland Cavaliers. LA made just eight of its 26 shots from deep, and Harden went 0-for-8 from beyond the arc. Harden finished with 19 points and six assists, while Zubac led the charge with a monster double-double of 33 points and 18 rebounds.
Kawhi Leonard (ankle) returned from a 10-game absence last Sunday, tallying 20 points, three rebounds, and three steals across 26 minutes. His absence was a huge blow for the Clippers, who are 24th in the NBA in adjusted defensive efficiency (119.9 points allowed per 100 possessions). The Clippers score 114.4 points per 100 possessions (21st) on 47.0% shooting from the field (15th).
The Lakers aim for their fifth straight win
The Los Angeles Lakers (12-4; 11-5 ATS; 10-6 O/U) are rolling on a four-game winning streak. After a couple of road wins against the New Orleans Pelicans, 118-104, and the Milwaukee Bucks, 119-95, the Lakers beat the Utah Jazz twice, 140-126 at home and 108-106 on the road.
LeBron James made his season debut in that comfortable victory over the Jazz last Tuesday. James double-doubled with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Luka Doncic led the way with 37 points and 10 dishes. Last Sunday, the Lakers barely outlasted Utah, and Doncic had 33 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists.
Deandre Ayton (15.5 PPG, 8.4 RPG) sustained a knee contusion in Salt Lake City and is questionable for Tuesday’s clash against the Clippers. All other players look ready to go. The Lakers tally 117.1 points per 100 possessions (15th in the league) and surrender 114.4 points in return (14th).
Clippers vs. Lakers Pick
Spread Pick for Clippers vs. Lakers
- Los Angeles Lakers -6 (4 units)
Luka Doncic looks unstoppable, and with LeBron James back in the lineup, the Lakers should see off the Clippers’ challenge. Kawhi Leonard’s return is a huge boost for the Clippers, but their defense has struggled all season, and it’s hard to trust them in this matchup.
The Lakers lead the NBA in 2-point percentage (62.0%) and are second in free-throw rate (.352). They don’t rely on 3-pointers, but the Lakers could easily get things going from downtown in this game, given the Clippers’ defensive woes. The Clippers allow 15.2 triples per 100 possessions (tied for 29th) on a 38.6 percentage clip (26th).
Over/Under Pick for Clippers vs. Lakers
- Over 227 (4 units)
Both teams are turnover-prone, and the Lakers’ defense has been way more aggressive than the Clippers’ defense so far this season. I expect the Lakers to push the ball in transition whenever they can and force the Clippers to run up and down the floor.
The Lakers tally 100.2 possessions per 48 minutes (17th in the NBA). On the other side, the Clippers play at the second-slowest pace in the league, recording just 96.6 possessions per 48 minutes. Yet, the Clippers struggle to defend, and the over has hit in five of their previous seven games overall.
The Clippers won’t win on the back of their defense. They need to take advantage of the Lakers’ flaws, and Purple-and-Gold’s interior defense is not elite. Keep in mind that Deandre Ayton might not be available which could limit their defense in the paint.
