The Mavericks need more from their offense
The Dallas Mavericks visited the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, looking to avoid their third straight defeat. In their previous two outings, the Mavericks suffered a 102-96 home loss to the Memphis Grizzlies and a 106-102 road defeat at the Miami Heat.
The Mavericks continue to struggle on the offensive side of the ball. They score just 105.4 points per 100 possessions (30th in the NBA) on 52.3% shooting from inside the arc (tied for 24th) and 31.8% from beyond the 3-point line (29th).
Cooper Flagg is having a middling rookie season, tallying 15.9 points per game on 45.1% shooting from the field. Anthony Davis (20.8 PPG, 10.2 RPG) missed 14 straight games and was questionable for Friday’s clash against the Lakers.
Kyrie Irving is recovering from a knee injury and could easily miss the entire season. Should the Mavs continue to struggle, they will certainly consider trading some of their players away, including Davis and Klay Thompson (10.3 PPG).
The Clippers need more from their defense
The Los Angeles Clippers hosted the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night, hoping to snap their two-game skid. The Clippers just finished their seven-game road trip with consecutive defeats against the Cleveland Cavaliers 120-105 and the Los Angeles Lakers 135-118.
Through their first 18 showings this season, the Clippers have been terrible on the defensive side of the ball. LA surrenders 121.0 points per 100 possessions (25th in the NBA) on 54.7% shooting from inside the arc (13th) and 38.9% from beyond the arc (28th).
James Harden tallies 27.9 points and 8.4 assists per game, while Ivica Zubac posts 16.6 points and 11.5 rebounds a night. Kawhi Leonard (23.1 PPG) appeared in just eight games due to an ankle injury, and the Clippers desperately need him in the lineup.
Bradley Beal’s season is already over. After averaging 8.2 points across six games, Beal decided to undergo hip surgery. Derrick Jones Jr. (10.5 PPG) is out with a knee injury, while Bogdan Bogdanovic (9.2 PPG) was questionable for Friday’s game against Memphis due to a hip injury.
Mavericks vs. Clippers Pick
Spread Pick for Mavericks vs. Clippers
- Los Angeles Clippers (4 units)
There are a lot of moving parts in this game. It’s the back end of a back-to-back set for both teams. The Mavericks might get Anthony Davis back, while the Clippers could decide to rest Kawhi Leonard.
I’m going with the Clippers simply because they have more offensive weapons than Dallas. The Mavericks are arguably a better defensive unit than LA, but Dallas’ offense has been an absolute disaster so far this season.
In their first meeting of the season, the Clippers blew a 13-point fourth-quarter lead before outlasting the Mavericks in double overtime. James Harden triple-doubled with 41 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists, and Ivica Zubac added 27 points and 11 boards. Naji Marshall and D’Angelo Russell led the Mavs with 28 points each.
Over/Under Pick for Mavericks vs. Clippers
- Under (4 units)
The Mavericks love to play at a fast pace. They register 102.3 points per 100 possessions (3rd in the NBA). On the other side, the Clippers tally just 96.6 possessions per 48 minutes (28th).
Both teams are turnover-prone. The Mavs are 27th in the league in turnover percentage (14.4%), and the Clippers rank 29th in this category (14.6%). Hereof, I will take the under.
The Clippers will look to slow things down, and on the back end of a back-to-back, both teams will have to deal with fatigue. I don’t think the Mavs have enough weapons to take full advantage of LA’s defensive shortcomings.
