Nuggets vs Timberwolves Key Matchups and Handicap

Nuggets

Much was made about how the Nuggets and Spurs handled their final game of the regular season because - in theory - San Antonio throwing that game away made the potential playoff path harder for both the Spurs and Nuggets. Denver is already finding that out the hard way as the Nuggets have fallen into a 2-1 hole after getting crushed in Minnesota in Game 3. Denver was held to 11 points in the first quarter and the Nuggets played arguably their worst game on offense all season.

Nikola Jokic shot 7-of-26 (26.9-percent) from the field, and if it hadn't been for 40 free throw attempts, the Nuggets probably would have struggled to crack 80 points. Jokic and Jamal Murray generate the headlines in Denver, but Aaron Gordon is the pin that keeps everything together. The Nuggets struggled to fill Gordon's shoes in Game 3, with Spencer Jones, Cameron Johnson and Christian Braun combining to score 14 points on 4-of-13 shooting from the field.

Minnesota

It's tough to criticize anything Minnesota did in Game 3, but we did raise an eyebrow at how many minutes the T-Wolves' starters played. We understand that it's the playoffs and you never want to take your foot off the gas, but Minnesota was up by 27 points. Did Jaden McDaniels really need to play 41 minutes? Did Rudy Gobert need to play 36 minutes?

Head coach Chris Finch keeps a short bench and plays a seven-man rotation for the most part, but if there was ever a time to give your guys a breather, that was probably it. The T-Wolves are playing with plenty of confidence right now, and we expect that to continue on Saturday with the home crowd behind them and a chance to take a commanding 3-1 series lead.

Nuggets

The Nuggets are coming off arguably their worst offensive game of the entire season, with Jokic shooting just 26.9 percent from the field and the team needing 40 free throw attempts just to stay respectable on the scoreboard. Denver has now dropped two of three in this series and faces a must-win Game 4 on the road without full clarity on Gordon's availability.

Timberwolves

Minnesota dominated Game 3 by 27 points and held the Nuggets to just 11 points in the first quarter, setting an early tone that Denver never recovered from. The Wolves are riding a wave of confidence, and the public has actually faded them slightly at the current number despite their dominant Game 3 performance.

Key Injuries and Notes - DEN vs MIN

Denver

  • Aaron Gordon - Did not play in Game 3, listed as questionable with a calf injury for tonight's contest

Calf injuries are not ideal, and the Nuggets struggled to fill Gordon's shoes in Game 3. Even if Gordon plays, his effectiveness on a compromised calf is a major question mark, and Denver's depth was exposed badly in his absence last game.

Timberwolves

No new injuries to report for Minnesota, though the heavy minutes from the Game 3 starters are worth monitoring. McDaniels at 41 minutes and Gobert at 36 in a 27-point blowout could create some lingering fatigue concerns in a quick turnaround for Game 4.

Nuggets vs Timberwolves ATS and Total Picks

  • Against the Spread: Minnesota Timberwolves +1.5 (-114)
  • Total: Under 229.5 (-110)

Minnesota has the home crowd, the momentum, and a healthier roster, while Denver is dealing with a Gordon injury and coming off the worst offensive performance of its season. Take the points with the Wolves and lean under in a game where Denver's offensive struggles look likely to continue against a defense that just locked them up for 48 minutes.

Final Score Prediction

  • Final Score: Minnesota 115, Denver 110

Expect a closer game than Game 3 with Denver showing more fight in a must-win spot, but Minnesota's defensive intensity and home crowd carry them to a narrow victory and a 3-1 series lead heading back to Denver.

This Game 4 is the kind of swing spot where line shopping matters - getting the Wolves at +1.5 versus +1 can be the difference between cashing and pushing if Denver wins by a single point.
