Detroit Begins to Cool Off
The Detroit Pistons still hold the top seed in the Eastern Conference standings, but have hit some bumps in the road recently as they have lost three of their last four coming into this game with Cleveland. They still have a two game lead on the second place Knicks, but that lead took a hit with their recent losses to the Jazz, Clippers and Heat. Their lone win in the recent stretch came on the road against the Lakers. Their most recent game was the loss to Miami, where they got 31 points and 11 assists from Cade Cunningham.
Cunningham is likely in line to make his second consecutive All-Star Game as he continues to lead the turnaround in Detroit after being selected first overall in 2021. This season he is leading Detroit with 26.6 PPG and 9.7 RPG, while adding another 6.3 RPG. He is a big guard who finished in the paint, but is working to improve his outside shot as he converts 2.0 threes per game on 33.0% shooting. Jalen Duren's game has taken a big leap, the 22-year old is 6'10 and 250 pounds and contributes 17.9 PPG and 10.6 RPG. Duren is listed as questionable with a right ankle sprain he suffered against Miami.
The Pistons have a balanced approach scoring approach, as they have four more players averaging double figures. This includes Tobias Harris (13.4 PPG), Ausar Thompson (11.6 PPG), Duncan Robinson (11.6 PPG) and Isaiah Stewart (10.0 PPG). The Pistons rank 15th in offensive efficiency and 4th in defensive efficiency according to dunksandthrees.com. Detroit plays at the 9th fastest pace in the NBA based upon their average possessions per game.
Cavaliers Win Three Straight
The Cleveland Cavaliers come into this matchup with the Pistons on a three game winning streak, with all three of those wins coming against Western Conference opponents. They won in San Antonio against the Spurs, then won consecutive home games against the Suns and the short-handed Nuggets. Cleveland is currently 7th in the Eastern Conference, but will want to finish in the top six to avoid the Play-In Tournament. In their win over Denver, Donovan Mitchell led the way with 33 points in the victory.
Mitchell has made the All-Star Team in each of his last six seasons, and was named First Team All NBA last season due to Cleveland's success in the regular season. They have not been winning at that same pace, but Mitchell is still getting 29.8 PPG and 5.5 APG to lead the team. He is one of the top outside shooters in the league, making 3.9 threes per game on 39.0% shooting from deep. Evan Mobley is a versatile big who scores 17.8 PPG, but is even better on the defensive end where he can guard multiple positions. Darius Garland is their point guard who contributes another 17.1 PPG while carrying most of the ballhandling responsibilities.
De'Andre Hunter (14.7 PPG) and Jaylon Tyson (13.3) PPG fill up the rest of the minutes on the wing, while Jarrett Allen is their tough big man who is getting 13.7 PPG and 7.8 RPG. Cleveland is ranked 3rd in offensive efficiency and 7th in defensive efficiency. Cleveland plays at a similar pace as Detroit, as the Cavs are 8th in the league in possessions per game.

Spread pick for Pistons vs. Cavaliers
- Cavaliers to cover (5 units)
Cleveland is catching Detroit at the right time, as Detroit has been slumping recently and Cleveland has won their last three. The injury report is more important than the trends, as Jalen Duren is listed as questionable with an ankle injury. The big man is vital to Detroit's success and just rolled his ankle in their most recent game. Detroit will not look to rush him back, and even if he plays he will likely be limited. This is trouble for Detroit, as Cleveland is loaded with frontcourt talent including Mobley and Allen. Mitchell and Cunningham could cancel each other out, but without Duren at full strength, the Cavs will be too much on the inside.
Take Cleveland to cover.
Over/Under Pick for Pistons vs. Cavaliers
- Over (4 units)
These teams are both in the top ten in pace of play, and will look to push the tempo here in a game that flies over the total. Cleveland plays fast, especially when Garland and Mitchell are on the floor together as they have great court vision and look for each other in transition. Evan Mobley adds to this as well, as he is not a classic back-to-the-basket big, he would rather score in a fast paced open floor. With Jalen Duren dealing with a hurt ankle, Detroit will look to increase the pace to get their perimeter players rolling. Cleveland scored 116 last time they played Detroit, and will put up another big number here.
