Detroit Looking to Even Record

Rockets Seek to Overcome Missed Chances
Houston had defending champ Oklahoma City on the ropes in their opener but a pair of miscues by Kevin Durant, one late in regulation and one late in overtime, turned what could have been a win into a narrow defeat. The Rockets now try to rebound at home as they take the floor here. Against Oklahoma City, Houston led by three after the opening quarter, by as many as 10 in the first half, and by six at intermission. The Rockets led by as many as 12 early in the third quarter and by four after three quarters. Houston led by one with 9.5 seconds to play in regulation when Durant went one of two at the line, setting up Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s tying bucket with 2.6 seconds left. In the second overtime, Houston again led by one when Durant fouled Gilgeous-Alexander with 2.3 seconds remaining. The reigning MVP hit both free throws, and Houston couldn’t answer on the other end.
For the contest, Houston shot 44.3% from the floor, including an 11 of 39 showing from beyond the arc, and converted 27 of 31 free throw attempts. The Rockets dominated the glass by a 52-38 margi,n but did turn the ball over 25 times, leading to 28 Thunder points. Alperen Sengun led Houston with 39 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists in a losing effort. Durant put up 23 points plus nine boards in his Rockets debut. Amen Thompson added 18 points, four rebounds, plus five assists, and Jabari Smith contributed 16 points in the game. The Rockets went just nine players deep in their rotation and got only 24 points from their bench in the season opener.
VanVleet (knee) is likely out for the season. Finney-Smith (ankle) is out indefinitely, while Jae’Sean Tate (ankle) and Isaiah Crawford (ankle) are both questionable. Watch for updates leading to tip-off.
Pistons vs. Rockets Pick
Pistons vs. Rockets Spread Pick
- Rockets -5 (4 units)
Detroit showed grit as they rallied against Chicago, but couldn’t complete the comeback in the Windy City. Now, the Pistons have to deal with a veteran, talent-laden squad that made the postseason a year ago. Sure, the backcourt depth is a little thin for Houston, and they would like the wing depth that a guy like Finney-Smith would provide. With that said, they have a stellar 1-2 punch with Sengun and Durant offensively. The Rockets should do a better job of protecting the ball than they did against the Thunder. Detroit is a team on the upswing, but they still have their work cut out for them against veteran teams that have the been there, done that swagger. Give the advantage to the Rockets here, especially playing at home.
Pistons vs. Rockets Over/Under Pick
- Under 226.5 (-110)
Detroit finished last season posting a 44-42-2 mark, including the postseason, to the over. The Pistons were 16th in the league in offensive efficiency and 9th in terms of tempo with 99.8 possessions per game. Detroit stayed under the total in their season opener as they combined with Chicago for 226 points to stay under the number of 236.5 set by the books. Including the postseason, Houston saw the over post a 47-40-2 mark in the 2024-25 campaign. The Rockets were 13th in offensive efficiency last season while ranking 18th in terms of pace with an average of 98.6 possessions per game. While Houston went over the mark in their opening game, the game was tied at 104 at the end of regulation, as it took double overtime to wind up over the mark. Each of the last three meetings between the teams stayed under the number. As a result, lean toward this one falling short as well.
