Detroit seeking a return to the glory days

The Detroit Pistons snapped a five-year playoff drought last season and are seeking their first playoff series victory since 2008. The Pistons were motivated by their playoff exit against the New York Knicks and have taken their collective game to the next level. Detroit ranks second in the league in defensive efficiency by Hollinger's NBA Team Statistics and are limiting opponents to limiting opponents to a shade below 110 points per contest. The Pistons have won 21 of their first 30 road games and hold a 3.5 game lead over Boston for the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

All-Star G Cade Cunningham is getting consideration for the best American born player in the league and ranks 12th in scoring at 25.2 points per game. Cunningham is second to Nikola Jokic in assists (9.8 apg) and pulls down 5.8 rebounds per night. Jalen Duren controls the interior for the Pistons with 18.4 points and 10.7 rebounds on average. Miami trying to avoid the Play-In Tournament

The Miami Heat have been bounced from the playoffs in the first round the last two seasons and appear to be headed that way again. The Heat have failed to land any marquee free agents lately and it could be time for 80-year old team president Pat Riley to retire. Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra has his team ranked fourth in the league in defensive efficiency by Hollinger's NBA Team Statistics and are allowing 116.6 points per game. The Heat are nine games above .500 at home and are locked in a three-way tie for sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings. On Friday, Miami snapped Charlotte’s six-game winning streak with a 128-120 home victory.

Miami made a shrewd trade in the offseason by landing Norman Powell from LA in a three-team deal. The 31-year old Powell was named to his first All-Star game and leads Miami in scoring with 22.5 points per game. Tyler Herro is a capable scorer (21.9 ppg) and playmaker, but has been limited to 19 games this season. Bam Adebayo is a force on both ends of the floor and leads the Heat in rebounding (9.8 rpg).

Key Injury Report for Miami:

  • Andrew Wiggins (DTD) - knee/toe
  • Nikola Jovic (out) - back
  • Norman Powell (out) - groin
  • Simone Fontecchio (out) - groin
  • Terry Rozier (out) - suspension

Detroit vs Miami Pick

Detroit vs Miami Spread Pick

  • Pick: Miami Spread

These two teams have split their previous two meetings, with each winning on the road. Despite owning the best record in the Eastern Conference, Detroit is just 9-13 ATS as a road favorite. Miami is the second most profitable team with a 38-26 record ATS. The Pistons are playing on back-to-back nights, which sets up well for the Heat. Take Miami to win at home as a small underdog.

Detroit vs Miami Over/Under Pick

  • Pick: Over

Miami plays at the fastest tempo in the NBA and Detroit ranks 12th in that category. The Pistons have played nine times this season with no rest and the over has cashed six times. Look for the Heat to take advantage of Detroit’s tired legs and hit the 120 plus point mark for the fourth straight time. Take the over.

Final Score Prediction: Miami Heat win 122-113
