Detroit and Portland close down their two-game regular-season set. On December 5, the Pistons outlasted the Trail Blazers 122-116 as 8.5-point home favorites, and the game went over the 235.5-point line. Portland is winless in four straight dates with Detroit.

The Pistons are topping the East
The Detroit Pistons (22-6; 16-12 ATS; 14-14 O/U) have won five of their last six games overall. After stopping their four-game winning streak with a 116-114 overtime defeat at the Dallas Mavericks, the Pistons cruised past the Charlotte Hornets 112-86 at home this past Saturday.

The Pistons hit just six of their 28 shots from deep last Saturday, but they held the Hornets to 31.5% shooting from the field and forced 24 turnovers. Moreover, Detroit outrebounded Charlotte 61-43 while posting 17 offensive rebounds.
Cade Cunningham tortured the Hornets for a triple-double of 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, while Jalen Duren double-doubled with 19 points and 11 boards. Cunningham averages 27.0 points, 9.2 assists, and 6.4 rebounds, and Duren tallies 18.0 points and 11.0 boards per game.
Detroit is topping the Eastern Conference, two and a half games ahead of the New York Knicks. The Pistons score 117.1 points per 100 possessions (9th in the NBA) and surrender 110.5 points in return (2nd).
The Trail Blazers eye their fourth straight W
The Portland Trail Blazers (12-16; 15-12-1 ATS; 18-10 O/U) have yet to win four straight games this season. They will have a chance to do it on Monday, as Portland has won its previous three games, beating the Golden State Warriors 136-131 and the Sacramento Kings twice, 134-133 in overtime and 98-93.
Last Thursday, the Trail Blazers blew an 18-point fourth-quarter lead at home, but they found a way to outlast the Kings. Two days later, the Blazers allowed just six 3-pointers while going 11-for-32 from beyond the arc at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.
Deni Avdija led the way for the Trail Blazers last Saturday, notching 24 points, 11 assists, and seven rebounds. Avdija averages 25.8 points, 7.1 boards, and 6.4 assists, while Shaedon Sharpe posts 22.0 points and 4.5 boards per game.
The Trail Blazers hold the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference. They score 114.4 points per 100 possessions (18th in the NBA) and allow 117.5 points in return (20th). Portland cannot count on Scoot Henderson, while Jrue Holiday and Jerami Grant are both questionable for Monday’s clash against Detroit.
Pistons vs. Trail Blazers Pick
Spread Pick for Pistons vs. Trail Blazers
- Detroit Pistons (4 units)
The Pistons are healthy and ready to rumble. Their defense has been excellent this season, and I expect another solid performance when the Pistons visit the Trail Blazers.
Detroit is a great rebounding team. The Pistons are 12th in the league in defensive rebound percentage and second in offensive rebound percentage (31.9%). On the other side, the Trail Blazers are fourth in offensive rebound percentage (30.9%), but they rank 29th in defensive rebound percentage (71.5%).
Portland outrebounded Detroit 48-37 in their first meeting of the season, but the Trail Blazers committed 20 turnovers and went just 12-for-37 from downtown. I’m backing the Pistons because of their defense.
Over/Under Pick for Pistons vs. Trail Blazers
- Over (4 units)
The Trail Blazers play fast, lean on 3-point shooting, and crush the offensive glass. They are third in the league in pace (102.4 possessions per 48 minutes) and sixth in 3-point rate (.453), but the Blazers make just 33.5% of their shots from deep (28th in the NBA).
The Pistons are 27th in 3-point rate (.350) and 11th in pace (100.8). They love to attack the rim and get to the free-throw line. Detroit is third in the league in free-throw rate (.315), while Portland ranks sixth in this category (.308).
These two teams combined for a whopping 83 free-throw attempts in their first meeting of the season. I expect more of the same at Moda Center in Portland, so give me the over.
