Grizzlies appear on verge of a longer win streak

Memphis (15-16 SU, 15-16 ATS, and 11-19-1 O/U) beat Milwaukee 125-104 on Friday, covering the spread as 2.5-point favorites. The Grizzlies shot 51 percent overall, including 13-for-34 from three-point distance. They scored 26 points at the foul line and outscored the Bucks 54-28 in the paint. Milwaukee committed 22 turnovers and managed only 15 second-quarter points.

F Jaren Jackson Jr. leads the Grizz in scoring at 18.0 points per game. He shoots 47.8 percent from the field. Seven other Memphis players score in double figures, as well. The Grizzlies average 115.4 points (19th) on 45.5 percent shooting (24th), while their opponents average 115.9 points (15th) on 46.6 percent shooting (11th).

The Grizzlies were 48-34 last season, finishing eighth in the NBA's Western Conference. They ranked second in the league in scoring (121.7 PPG), just 0.2 points off the lead. Unfortunately for fans, Memphis lost its momentum down the stretch, dropping 10 of its final 16 games. Memphis lost Desmond Bane to Orlando in free agency, but made several intriguing moves that should boost the team's depth. Resigning the Michigan State product Jackson Jr. was the team's top priority after Bane's departure, and the additions of two-time champion Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and three-point threat Ty Jerome bring stability to the backcourt. The Grizzlies also traded for forward Cedric Coward, the 11th overall pick in the draft, who showed off a fluid three-point stroke, high motor, and rebounding prowess in college.

Wizards covered in three of their last four

Washington (6-23 SU, 11-18 ATS, and 19-10 O/U) beat Toronto 138-117 in its previous game, winning straight-up as eight-point 'dogs. The Wizards shot nearly 60 percent from the field, including 45 percent from three-point range. They also outrebounded the Raptors 46-33 and outscored the Raptors 62-44 in the paint.

Guard CJ McCollum leads Washington with 18.7 points and 3.6 dimes per game. The veteran shoots 39.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Wizards score 112.6 points per game (26th) on 46.3 percent shooting (21st), including 36.0 percent from beyond the arc (14th). Defensively, Washington gives up 126.1 points per game (29th), and its opponents shoot 47.5 percent (18th), including 36.9 percent from beyond the arc (23rd).

The Wizards went 18-64 last season, finishing 15th in the Eastern Conference. Washington was in a clear rebuild, as rookies accounted for 35 percent of the team's minutes. The front office made a few moves to resign and acquire veteran players this offseason, as well. Khris Middleton picked up his player option, and CJ McCollum was brought in via a trade with New Orleans, giving the Wiz two former All-Stars to lead the group. Malcolm Brogdon (free agent), Jordan Poole (trade), and Marcus Smart (waived) were allowed to leave, with youngsters Cam Whitmore (20th pick in the 2023 NBA draft) and Tre Johnson (sixth pick in the 2025 draft) brought in to take their place. The big man Sarr is the centerpiece of the Wizards' rebuild after he averaged 13.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.5 blocks as a rookie.

Washington Wizards Injury Report:

  • SF Corey Kispert (hamstring) is day-to-day.

Grizzlies vs. Wizards Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Grizzlies vs. Wizards

  • Memphis covers (4 Units)

I came away impressed with Memphis' last two performances, as they won consecutive games by double digits to bounce back from losses to Washington and Oklahoma City. They covered the spread in both games and have covered in four of their last six. I'm also fading a Wizards team that shot way better than its average in the previous game, meaning they will be due for negative regression. I doubt they will beat Memphis twice in less than ten days, as the Grizzlies should be well-prepared for the rematch. The visitors rank just outside the top ten in defensive efficiency, as they utilize their length to limit opponents to the fourth-fewest shot attempts at the rim.

Bet on Memphis to coast to a win on Sunday in DC!

Over/Under Pick for Grizzlies vs. Wizards

  • Under (4 Units)

The Grizzlies' defense will shine, forcing the Wizards into too many contested perimeter shots. They rarely allow their opponents to get to the charity stripe (3rd in opponent FT attempt rate) and do a great job at boxing out for rebounds on defense (4th in defensive rebounding percentage). Memphis has also played to the under in 61.3 percent of its games this season, fourth-most in the NBA. The under is also appealing from Washington's side, as the Wiz aren't likely to shoot a high percentage again after a 138-point performance.

The under is 4-1 after a Washington win and 11-5 in Memphis' road games this season. Bet on that outcome in Sunday's East-West clash in DC.
