Hawks are flying high this season
Atlanta (12-8 SU, 10-10 ATS, and 11-9 O/U) beat Cleveland 130-123 in its previous game. The Hawks shot 53 percent overall and dominated in the paint, outscoring the Cavs 64-46. They played Philadelphia on Sunday. With G Trae Young (17.8 PPG) sidelined with a knee injury, the Hawks are paced by F Jalen Johnson, who averages 21.9 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 7.3 dimes per game. They score 117.8 points per game (16th) on 48.9 percent shooting (5th), and hold their opponents to 115.7 points per game (15th) on 46.6 percent shooting (13th).
The Hawks were 40-42 last season, finishing 8th in the Eastern Conference. They were bounced from the playoffs in the Play-In Tournament, suffering consecutive losses to the seventh-seed Magic and tenth-seed Heat. It was their fourth-straight appearance in the tourney. Atlanta was busy this offseason revamping its roster. Kobe Bufkin (trade), Clint Capela (trade), and Caris LeVert (free agent) were among the seven departures, with Nickeil Alexander-Walker (sign-and-trade), Luke Kennard (free agent), and Kristaps Porziņģis (trade) the most notable additions.
The group of newcomers joins a young, budding Hawks lineup featuring Most Improved Player Dyson Daniels and last season's Rookie of the Year runner-up Zaccharie Risacher. With Johnson and Young leading the way, there's clearly plenty of talent on this year's roster, but what will it take for the Hawks to escape the Play-In Tournament? The addition of former Timberwolves guard Alexander-Walker will boost the team's perimeter defense, leading to more transition buckets off turnovers. He and Daniels will form a terrific backcourt tandem, as Daniels is an elite on-ball defender and Alexander-Walker is a pest on screens. The frontcourt should also be formidable with Porziņģis and Onyeka Okongwu patrolling the paint.
Atlanta Hawks Basketball Injury Report:
- Kristaps Porziņģis (illness) is questionable. He has sat out consecutive games.
Are the Pistons the best team in the East?
Detroit (16-4 SU, 13-7 ATS, and 11-9 O/U) beat Miami 138-135 on Saturday, covering as four-point spread underdogs. The Pistons are led by G Cade Cunningham, who averages 28.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 9.4 assists per game. They score 119.8 points per game (7th) on 48.8 percent shooting (6th), and hold their opponents to 114.0 points per game (7th) on 44.6 percent shooting (4th).
The Pistons went 44-38 last season, finishing sixth in the East. They lost in seven games in the first round of the playoffs to New York, but it was a tremendous turnaround campaign, as they went from the worst team in the league to clinching a playoff spot. With Cunningham fresh off his first All-Star nomination and a well-structured core around him, the Pistons are a team no one wants to play in the postseason.
Detroit didn't make any major splashes in free agency during the offseason, but the signing of forward Duncan Robinson was impactful. The veteran sharpshooter has filled in nicely for Malik Beasley, hitting 43.3 percent of treys in his first season in The D. He and fellow Michigan alum Caris LeVert (9.6 PPG and 3.0 APG) have solidified the Pistons' backcourt. While young and less experienced than some of the East's top teams, Detroit is brimming with upside. Don't count them out this season.
Detroit Pistons Basketball Injury Report:
- Caris LeVert (knee) is questionable.
- Jalen Duren (leg) is probable.
Hawks vs. Pistons Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Hawks vs. Pistons
- Detroit covers spread (5 Units)
The Pistons will attack the Hawks inside, especially with Duren likely to play and Porzingis unlikely to be available to protect the rim. The home team leads the NBA in rim shot attempt rate, and the visitors are 18th in rim defense. Detroit also ranks third in free-throw attempt rate. The Pistons should dominate on the glass (4th in total rebounding rate) against the Hawks (26th), gaining extra possessions with offensive rebounds (13.4 per game).
With extra rest and home-court advantage (6-3 ATS at Little Caesars Arena), Detroit will cover the spread.
Over/Under Pick for Hawks vs. Pistons
- Over (5 Units)
Betting Trends: The over is 8-1-1 in the previous ten matchups between Atlanta and Detroit, including 7-1 in the last eight. It's also 5-2 in the Pistons' previous seven games heading into Monday's contest.
These teams are higher-tempo, ranking 8th and 11th in pace, as the Hawks average the fourth-shortest offensive possession length and the Pistons average the sixth-shortest defensive possession length. With the home team likely to score 60-plus points in the paint and another 15 or more at the foul line, they will lead the scoring charge, while the visitors will do their best to keep up with an inside-out approach (9th in rim FG% and 9th in 3PT%).
