Hawks rank 8th in defensive efficiency this season
Atlanta (11-7 SU, 9-9 ATS, and 9-9 O/U) beat Charlotte 113-110 in its previous game. The Hawks shot 49 percent overall and dominated in the paint, outscoring the Hornets 66-48. It was their seventh win in nine games. With G Trae Young (17.8 PPG) sidelined several more weeks with a knee injury, the Hawks are paced by F Jalen Johnson, who averages 22.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 7.0 dimes per game. They score 117.3 points per game (17th) on 48.9 percent shooting (7th), and hold their opponents to 114.4 points per game (10th) on 46.0 percent shooting (11th).
The Hawks were 40-42 last season, finishing 8th in the Eastern Conference. They were bounced from the playoffs in the Play-In Tournament, suffering consecutive losses to the seventh-seed Magic and tenth-seed Heat. It was their fourth-straight appearance in the tourney. Atlanta was busy this offseason revamping its roster. Kobe Bufkin (trade), Clint Capela (trade), and Caris LeVert (free agent) were among the seven departures, with Nickeil Alexander-Walker (sign-and-trade), Luke Kennard (free agent), and Kristaps Porziņģis (trade) the most notable additions.
The group of newcomers joins a young, budding Hawks lineup featuring Most Improved Player Dyson Daniels and last season's Rookie of the Year runner-up Zaccharie Risacher. With Johnson and Young leading the way, there's clearly plenty of talent on this year's roster, but what will it take for the Hawks to escape the Play-In Tournament? The addition of former Timberwolves guard Alexander-Walker will boost the team's perimeter defense, leading to more transition buckets off turnovers. He and Daniels will form a terrific backcourt tandem, as Daniels is an elite on-ball defender and Alexander-Walker is a pest on screens. The frontcourt should also be formidable with Porziņģis and Onyeka Okongwu patrolling the paint.
Atlanta Hawks Basketball Injury Report:
- C Kristaps Porziņģis (rest) did not play on Sunday against Charlotte.
- G Luke Kennard (8.1 PPG) also sat out Sunday's game (hip inflammation) and is considered day-to-day.
Wizards are 0-10 SU and 3-7 ATS in their last ten games
Washington (1-15 SU, 4-12 ATS, and 10-6 O/U) lost 121-120 to Chicago on Saturday. The Wizards, who haven't won since beating Dallas on Oct. 24, led by as many as 16, but couldn't finish. They outshot the Bulls, but committed 15 turnovers, resulting in 23 points. They also put Chicago on the foul line too often, as the Bulls knocked down 25 of their 30 free throws.
Center Alex Sarr leads Washington with 18.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.0 blocks per game. The second-year pro shoots 50.7 percent from the floor. The Wizards score 113.0 points per game (23rd) on 45.9 percent shooting (21st), including 37.5 percent from beyond the arc (9th). Defensively, Washington gives up 129.2 points per game (30th), and its opponents shoot 48.0 percent (23rd), including 37.2 percent from beyond the arc (24th).
The Wizards went 18-64 last season, finishing 15th in the Eastern Conference. Washington was in a clear rebuild, as rookies accounted for 35 percent of the team's minutes. The front office made a few moves to resign and acquire veteran players this offseason, as well. Khris Middleton picked up his player option, and CJ McCollum was brought in via a trade with New Orleans, giving the Wiz two former All-Stars to lead the group. Malcolm Brogdon (free agent), Jordan Poole (trade), and Marcus Smart (waived) were allowed to leave, with youngsters Cam Whitmore (20th pick in the 2023 NBA draft) and Tre Johnson (sixth pick in the 2025 draft) brought in to take their place. The big man Sarr is the centerpiece of the Wizards' rebuild after he averaged 13.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.5 blocks as a rookie.
Washington Wizards Basketball Injury Report:
- G Tre Johnson (11.5 PPG) is out with a strained left hip flexor.
- F Khris Middleton (9.5 PPG) (knee) and F Marvin Bagley III (7.6 PPG) are day-to-day (hip). Both players sat out Saturday's game against Chicago.
Hawks vs. Wizards Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Hawks vs. Wizards
- Wizards +10 (5 Units)
I side with Washington ATS on Tuesday.
The Wiz have covered in two of their previous three games, nearly beating the Bulls straight-up last time out. Atlanta should win outright, but I disagree that the Hawks should be laying ten points, as they haven't covered as double-digit favorites this season and failed to cover last game as 8.5-point favorites against the Hornets. The Wizards are sneaky-deep, with eight players averaging between 8 and 18 points, and they rank in the top ten in three-point percentage. Couple that with the Hawks' average rim defense (16th), especially with Porzingis hobbled, and there's an opportunity for the home team to keep the game closer than ten points.
Over/Under Pick for Hawks vs. Wizards
- Over 237.5 (4 Units)
The over is my prediction for the total, as I believe this will be a higher-scoring game if Washington covers the spread, given that the Wizards rank dead last in defensive efficiency rating. They are also the fourth-fastest-paced team in the NBA this season, averaging the second-shortest offensive possession length. The Hawks won't try to slow it down either, as they average just 1.4 fewer possessions per 48 minutes. The over cashed in three of the four games between Atlanta and Washington last season. If the home team is more effective offensively than usual, as I project, the total will exceed 237 points in Tuesday's game between these teams.
