The Heat are back on track
The Miami Heat (14-7; 13-8 ATS; 12-8-1 O/U) put an end to their six-game winning streak last Saturday, suffering a 138-135 defeat to the Detroit Pistons. Two days later, the Heat bounced back with a 140-123 home victory over the LA Clippers.
Miami went 24-for-46 from downtown last Monday. The Heat led the Clippers by as many as 38 points. Norman Powell dropped 30 points on his former team, Bam Adebayo double-doubled with 27 points and 14 rebounds, and Davion Mitchell had 16 points and 12 assists.
Powell is having a great first season with the Heat. He’s hitting 45.8% of his shots from deep while averaging 25.0 points and 3.7 rebounds. Tyler Herro (foot) made his season debut in that narrow win over Dallas, and he’s tallying 24.8 points and 4.8 boards per game.
The Heat score 117.2 points per 100 possessions (12th in the NBA) and allow 111.7 points in return (3rd). They are fifth in the league in 3-point percentage (38.2%) and second in opposing 3-point percentage (32.0%).
The Mavericks eye their third straight W
The Dallas Mavericks (7-15; 10-12 ATS; 8-14 O/U) just finished their four-game road trip with consecutive victories against the LA Clippers 114-110 and the Denver Nuggets 131-121. For the first time this season, the Mavs strung together a couple of wins, which tells enough about their campaign.
Last Monday, the Mavericks overcame a 17-point deficit at Ball Arena in Denver. They shot 55.8% from the field (16-for-31 from downtown) while posting a shiny 35/8 assist-to-turnover ratio. Anthony Davis led the way with 32 points and 13 rebounds, and Ryan Nembhard had 28 points and 10 assists.
Davis missed 15 games due to a calf injury. He’s tallying 21.1 points and 9.9 rebounds per game, while rookie Cooper Flagg is adding 17.0 points and 6.6 boards a night. P.J. Washington (16.0 PPG, 7.8 RPG) and Daniel Gafford (9.4 PPG, 6.5 RPG) both missed the Nuggets game and are considered day-to-day.
The Mavericks score just 107.5 points per 100 possessions (30th in the NBA) and surrender 112.3 points in return (4th). They rank 28th in the league in 3-point percentage (32.9%) and fourth in opposing 3-point percentage (32.7%).
Heat vs. Mavericks Pick
Spread Pick for Heat vs. Mavericks
- Miami Heat -4 (4 units)
The Heat blew a 13-point lead in that 106-102 home victory over the Mavericks, who missed Anthony Davis. The game was tied at 102-102 with 1:05 left on the clock. Tyler Herro scored a go-ahead basket, while Bam Adebayo sealed the win with a couple of free throws.
We should see another tight battle between these two teams. Now, the Mavs can count on Davis, but their frontcourt will be quite shorthanded should P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford remain on the shelf.
Frankly, this game could easily go either way. Both teams are capable of playing tough defense, and I will take the Heat because of their offense. Dallas’ shooting has been terrible this season, and Miami won’t allow a lot of open looks. The Heat will continue to attack the paint, and guys like Herro, Adebayo, and Powell could make the difference down the stretch.
Over/Under Pick for Heat vs. Mavericks
- Under 240 (4 units)
Miami is playing at the fastest pace in the NBA. The Heat tally a staggering 105.5 possessions per 48 minutes. The Mavericks register 102.0 possessions per 48 minutes (tied for 4th), so we should see a lot of running up and down the floor.
However, these two teams defend the 3-point line at an elite level. Their transition defense has been excellent, so I will take the under. In their first meeting of the season, Dallas went 12-for-40 from beyond the arc, while Miami hit just five of its 27 shots from deep. The Heat outscored the Mavs 64-52 in the paint.
