Houston Lifting Off

The Houston Rockets were one of the surprise teams of 2024-25, rising up the standings in the Western Conference and earning a playoff spot. This season, after securing the rights to future Hall-of-Famer Kevin Durant in a blockbuster offseason trade, expectations are even higher for the Rockets. They haven’t disappointed thus far, winning nine of their first 12 games. Durant helped the Rockets to their 9th win on Sunday, pouring in 35 points in the Rockets’ 117-113 overtime win over the visiting Magic. Alperen Sengun had a big night as well, scoring 30 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, and dishing out eight assists. The win was the fourth straight for Houston.

The Rockets’ offense has jumped to the top of the pack this season with the addition of Durant. The team ranks first in the NBA in points per game. They are also first in offensive efficiency and 8th in efficient field goal percentage. The Rockets are also first in 3-point shooting in the NBA. Defensively, they are sixth in the NBA in points allowed per game. They are 12th in defensive efficiency and 12th in field goal defensive efficiency. The Rockets are vulnerable on the perimeter, ranked just 19th in 3-point defense. They are third in the league in margin of victory. They are the top rebounding team in the NBA and are 19th in turnovers per game.

Key Injuries for Rockets:

  • F Tari Eason (hip) is out.
  • F Jabari Smith (knee) is questionable.
  • F Dorian Finney-Smith (ankle surgery) is out.
  • G Fred VanVleet (ACL) is out for the season.

Cavaliers Ready for a Big, Early Test

The Cavaliers get set to host the Rockets, riding a two-game winning streak. They are now 10-5 on the season, as they attempt to make their first trip to the NBA Finals this season for the first time since the departure of LeBron James. The Cavs picked up their 10th win on Monday night in a 118-106 win over the Bucks in Cleveland. The Cavs trailed by seven after one quarter but won each of the final three quarters to pull away for the win. Donovan Mitchell, the leading scorer in the Eastern Conference, scored 37 points, including 25 in the first half, to pace the Cavaliers’ offensive attack.

The path for the Cavaliers to return to the NBA Finals is wide open this season. After finishing with the best record in the conference last season, the Cavs were bounced in the second round of the playoffs. This season, with major injuries to the Celtics’ and Pacers’ rosters, the Cavaliers are the early frontrunners to be the beasts of the East. The team is ranked 8th in the NBA in scoring thus far. They are 13th in offensive efficiency and 16th in field goal percentage efficiency. The Cavs are just 19th in 3-point shooting. They are 16th in scoring defense. The Cavs are 7th in the league in defensive efficiency and 14th in defensive field goal efficiency. They have struggled defensively on the perimeter, ranking 25th in 3-point defense. The Cavs are sixth in total rebounds and 10th in turnovers.

Rockets at Cavaliers

Point Spread Pick for Rockets at Cavs

Rockets -1 (4 units)

The Rockets come in with four straight wins and have one of the more explosive offenses in the NBA. The availability of Garland is critical for the Cavs. While the Rockets are winning without utilizing a traditional point guard, Garland could help put the pressure on the Rockets’ guards and force some mismatches. The Rockets can put pressure on Mitchell thanks to the defensive prowess of Amen Thompson. The Rockets will cause defensive mismatches thanks to the length of Durant and his ability to space the floor. Sengun will also force Allen away from the basket, thanks to his ability to shoot from all over the floor. The Rockets’ top-ranked 3-point shooting will be a huge issue for a Cavs team that is just 25th in 3-point defense. Expect Houston to make it five straight wins with a quality win on the road against the Cavs.

Take the Rockets.

Over/Under Pick for Rockets at Cavs

  • Over 233 (4 units)

The Rockets are the top-scoring team in the NBA heading into this matchup. The Cavs have been solid as well, ranked 8th in the NBA in scoring. Both teams play fast, with the Cavs ranked sixth in pace of play and the Rockets checking in at 7th. The Rockets have scored 121 or more points in four of their last five games. This one will be fast-paced and should feature plenty of quality three-point looks from both teams.

Take the over.
