The second game of this first-round Western Conference series tips off Tuesday night in Los Angeles, and the Houston Rockets are already facing an uphill climb after dropping the opener on the road. If you are looking for sharper NBA predictions heading into a Game 2 spot that already has a complicated injury picture and a total that just will not seem to stay put, this one delivers the kind of handicapping puzzle that separates the market from the casual bettor. Breakdown, spread analysis, total pick, and a projected final score are all waiting below.

Quick Picks and Prediction

  • Spread Pick: Los Angeles -4.5
  • Total Pick: Under 206.5
  • Projected Final Score: Los Angeles 104, Houston 98

Odds and Line Movement

This is a game where the market has been sending mixed signals. The spread opened with Houston as a small favorite and has since flipped to Los Angeles, while the total has been on a slow climb higher even as public money pours in on the under. The current numbers reflect a market that is still trying to price in the uncertainty around Kevin Durant's availability.

Rockets vs Lakers Key Matchups and Handicap

Kevin Durant was a somewhat-surprising scratch prior to Saturday's Game 1. Durant is dealing with a knee contusion, and despite participating in pregame warm-ups, he was unable to go in the series opener in Los Angeles. The Lakers emerged with a 107-98 home win behind a 27-point effort from Luke Kennard. LeBron James finished with 19 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds. Durant is listed as questionable heading into this one, while LA's Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves have both been ruled out.

We recommended a play on the under in Game 1 on Saturday and we are comfortable going right back to the same well. The Lakers and Rockets combined for 64 points in the fourth quarter and that game still stayed under the total. With a similar script in Game 2, we wouldn't be shocked if this game failed to clear the 200-point mark.

Lakers

The Lakers shot 60.6-percent from the field, including 52.6-percent from the three-point line. With all due respect to Luke Kennard, can you realistically expect him to go 5-for-5 from the three-point line again? DeAndre Ayton and Rui Hachimura combined to shoot 14-of-20 (70.0-percent) from the field. Can you realistically expect that duo to replicate that kind of production?

Los Angeles has not been a defensive juggernaut by any means this season, but for whatever reason, the Lakers have the Rockets' number. LA has held Houston to an average of 105.3 points per game over their last six meetings. The under is 8-5 in the Lakers' last 13 games.

Rockets

Durant was very productive in the regular season and he showed that he is still one of the best scorers in the league, but the Rockets' offense was not impressive all season. Durant's potential return is not going to fix an offense whose primary strategy is built around grabbing offensive rebounds following missed shots.

The Rockets finished 17th in effective field goal shooting and 19th in true shooting percentage during the regular season. We're expecting another low-scoring affair on Tuesday night in LA.

  • The under is 8-5 in the Lakers' last 13 games.
  • The Lakers have held Houston to an average of 105.3 points per game over their last six meetings.
  • Los Angeles shot 60.6-percent from the field and 52.6-percent from three-point range in Game 1.
  • The Lakers and Rockets combined for 64 points in the fourth quarter of Game 1 and the game still stayed under the total.
  • Houston finished 17th in effective field goal shooting and 19th in true shooting percentage during the regular season.

HOU vs LAL Key Injuries and Notes

  • Kevin Durant (knee contusion) is listed as questionable for Game 2 after being a scratch in Game 1 despite participating in pregame warm-ups.
  • Luka Doncic has been ruled out for Los Angeles.
  • Austin Reaves has been ruled out for Los Angeles.
  • Luke Kennard scored 27 points in Game 1 and went 5-for-5 from three-point range.
  • LeBron James filled the stat sheet in Game 1 with 19 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds.
  • DeAndre Ayton and Rui Hachimura combined to shoot 14-of-20 from the field in Game 1.

ATS and Total Picks

  • ATS Pick: Los Angeles -4.5
  • Total Pick: Under 206.5

Los Angeles is going to be the most popular side despite losing both Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, and for good reason. The Lakers have simply owned Houston in their recent matchups, and holding the Rockets to 105.3 points per game across their last six meetings is the kind of trend that carries weight in a playoff setting. Even without Doncic and Reaves, the team that just shot 60.6-percent from the floor in Game 1 should be favored at home. The under is the stronger side of this ticket, though. Public money has consistently sided with the under even as the total has inched higher, and the recent head-to-head scoring history, combined with Houston's offensive inefficiency numbers, points right back to another low-scoring game.

Final Score Prediction

  • Final Score Prediction: Los Angeles 104, Houston 98
  • Spread Result: Los Angeles covers -4.5
  • Total Result: Under 206.5

How to Bet Rockets vs Lakers Game 2

This is a matchup where grabbing the right number and the right juice is everything. The under has moved from 205.5 up to 206.5, and anyone still able to find a book offering the lower number should jump on it immediately. On the spread, the line has flipped entirely from Game 1 to Game 2, so shopping for the best price on Los Angeles -4.5 is well worth the extra few minutes of effort.

If you want to take a low-risk swing on a playoff game with so much injury uncertainty, social sportsbooks let you play without putting real cash on the line. For traditional sportsbook action, grabbing the bet365 bonus code can pad your bankroll before locking in the Lakers and the under. And if you want a sweepstakes-style alternative that still pays cash prizes, the fliff promo code is another solid landing spot for your Game 2 plays.

However you get down on Rockets at Lakers Game 2, the two angles to lean on are Los Angeles laying the short number at home and the under cashing for a second straight game. The injury report may still shift before tip-off, but the shape of this matchup has not changed, and the numbers should reflect that once the ball goes up.
