Indiana Pacers at Toronto Raptors predictions

Two of the most surprising teams in the Eastern Conference face each other on Wednesday when the Toronto Raptors (13-5) face the Indiana Pacers (2-15).

The Raptors beat the Pacers 129-111 as a six-point favorite when these teams played on Nov. 15 this season.

What a difference a year makes

While the Raptors have been one of the better surprise teams in the NBA, the Indiana Pacers have been one of the biggest disappointments. The team already knew it would be tough without Tyrese Haliburton, who is out for the season, but additional injuries have pushed them to the worst record in the NBA.

As bad as the season has been, the Pacers have covered the spread in three straight games and are coming off a 122–117 loss to the Detroit Pistons, which could be a small step in the right direction.

Indiana ranks 29th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 23rd in defensive efficiency. Pascal Siakam leads the team with 24.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game. Benedict Mathurin is next with 24.3 points and 6.7 rebounds, but he has only appeared in six games this season.

Injuries remain a major issue, as the Pacers are still without Obi Toppin and Aaron Nesmith in addition to Haliburton. They rank 30th in both field goal percentage and three-point percentage, and are 28th in scoring at 110.5 points per game. Defensively, they are fifth in opponent three-point percentage, but they allow 122.8 points per game (26th) and rank 24th in defensive field goal percentage.

Key Injury Report for Pacers:

  • G Aaron Nesmith (knee) is out 3-4 weeks.

Raptors rolling

The Toronto Raptors will look to protect their eight-game winning streak as they play their fourth straight home game on Wednesday. The Raptors are coming off a 110–99 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday and are one of the best stories in the NBA this season. They currently hold the second-best record in the Eastern Conference, are 6–2 at home, and 12–2 against teams in the East.

Against the spread, Toronto has also been impressive at 11–7. The Raptors rank fifth in the NBA in offensive efficiency and 12th in defensive efficiency. Brandon Ingram leads the team with 21.6 points per game, followed by RJ Barrett at 19.4 and Scottie Barnes at 19.2. Jakob Poeltl leads the team with 8.1 rebounds per game and adds 10.9 points per game. RJ Barrett is out with a knee injury and will not play against Indiana.

Toronto ranks in the top seven in field goal percentage, three-point percentage, and points per game. Defensively, the Raptors are also in the top ten in points allowed, field goal percentage allowed, and three-point percentage allowed.

Indiana Pacers at Toronto Raptors Predictions

Spread Prediction and Pick for Pacers vs. Raptors

  • Raptors -10 (4 units)

The Pacers are getting healthier, but are still very banged up. Although they have covered three straight, this feels like a strong buy-low spot for the Raptors, who are playing as well as any team in the Eastern Conference. Toronto beat Indiana by 18 points just 11 days ago as a six-point underdog on the road, and it is tough to trust the Pacers in this matchup. The Raptors have covered in six of their last eight games, and I am going to roll with them again.

Total Pick for Pacers vs. Raptors

  • Under 236 (4 units)

Indiana’s offense has been one of the worst in the league, especially with so many key players out. They rank near the bottom in field goal percentage, three-point percentage, and overall scoring. Against a Toronto defense that is top ten in several major categories, it is hard to trust the Pacers to carry their share of this total.

Toronto plays a more controlled style, ranking highly in efficiency but not in pace. With RJ Barrett ruled out, the Raptors are down a reliable shot creator, which doesn't help them offensively. could also contribute to a slightly slower, more defensive-minded game. Toronto has held five of its last eight opponents below 112 points, and Indiana’s offensive limitations match up poorly with the Raptors’ physical perimeter defense.

Even though the Pacers’ recent defensive results have been bad, their last three games have shown slight improvement and they remain strong at guarding the three. I will take the under here.
